A Roma family in Cegléd, Hungary was woken at midnight by masked men screaming "You're going to die now!" then a Molotov cocktail was thrown into their home. Eight children were inside.

This is not an isolated incident. This is what happens when hate speech goes unchallenged including from MEPs on the floor of the European Parliament.

When politicians call Roma people "criminals" with no consequences, they hand justification to people with machetes and fire.

The EU's new AgoraEU programme doesn't even name antigypsyism. Leaving it out is a political choice. Roma families are living with the consequences.

Mental Health Week is a reminder that behind every statistic, policy paper, or headline… there are real young people trying to navigate pain, stigma, healing, and belonging.

That’s why we’re happy to support our member organisations Asociatia Nevo Parudimos, Регионална Ромска Образовна Младинска Асоцијација - RROMA, Amaro Drom e.V. and others and share the final conference of the When Scars Become Art project, taking place on 22 May in Berlin.

The project brings together research, policy recommendations, and practical tools focused on youth mental health, inclusion, and empowerment across Europe.

📍 The conference will include a panel discussion with youth networks and European stakeholders on mental health, participation, and social inclusion.

The project has also developed:

We had the honour of speaking at the European Parliament during the flagship event of European Mental Health Week a powerful reminder that mental health must be at the heart of how we shape our societies.

At the event “Stronger Together: A Path Towards a European Mental Health Strategy for All”, organised by Mental Health Europe and the European Parliament Intergroup on Mental Health, Amana Ferro joined a panel alongside Members of the European Parliament to speak about something that is too often overlooked: how inequality shapes mental health.

Discrimination, poverty, exclusion, and lack of access to basic services don’t just affect opportunities; they affect how people feel, how they cope, and how they see their future.

For many Roma communities, these are not abstract issues. They are daily experiences. And they leave a deep, lasting impact both mentally and physically.

Statement – Racist rhetoric against Roma in the European Parliament must not go unchallenged

(Please support us by sharing this statement)

We strongly condemn the openly racist statements made by two Members of the European Parliament during plenary debate on 29 April in Strasbourg on Roma inclusion, equality, and fundamental rights.

One MEP shamefully declared that “these people are living at the cost of other citizens… let’s stop subsidising criminals… they are Gypsies and they live as Gypsies.” Another claimed that EU funds for minorities are “money that we throw in the bin for subsidising Muslims and Gypsies.”

Such statements are not only factually false. They are dehumanising, incite hatred, and perpetuate dangerous stereotypes against Roma communities across Europe.

We also condemn the remarks of a Slovak MEP who dismissed systemic discrimination against minorities and framed support programmes as a threat to “European nations,” contributing to a broader narrative that fuels exclusion, racism, and division.

There is no place for antigypsyism - or any form of racism - within the European Parliament.

We call on the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to publicly condemn these statements and to use her full powers under Rule 202 of the Parliament’s Rules of Procedure to sanction the MEPs concerned.

At the same time, we would like to thank MEPs Marie Toussaint, Estrella Galán, and João Oliveira for speaking out during the debate and challenging these unacceptable and racist narratives.

We also extend our appreciation to Tomáš Zdechovský, Krzysztof Śmiszek, Hristo Petrov, Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, and Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, representing the EU Presidency, for their continued support of Roma equality, including their recognition of Roma Week and the essential role of civil society.

Their interventions demonstrate that there are voices within the European Parliament committed to upholding fundamental rights, equality, and human dignity.

The European Union must remain a space where Roma people and all minorities are respected, protected, and treated as equal citizens.

We’re proud to share the launch of our new report, Roma Index (RIPE), a comparative overview of 20 Council of Europe member states (2024–2025).

The report was officially presented during this year’s Roma Week in Brussels - a moment that brought together policymakers, civil society, and Roma leaders to reflect on where we stand… and where we’re still falling short.

❓ So what is this report, really, about?

At its core, it’s a reality check. It looks at how countries across Europe are implementing Council of Europe standards on Roma rights - not just on paper, but in practice. By combining desk research, civil society input, and monitoring data, it maps patterns across 20 countries and highlights what’s working, what’s not, and where progress is simply too slow.

And the picture is... well, it is mixed.

Yes, almost all countries now have national Roma strategies in place. But the report shows a persistent gap between commitment and delivery - with weak funding, limited accountability, and too little meaningful participation of Roma communities, especially women and young people.

The findings cut across key areas - education, housing, employment, health - and they’re hard to ignore. Segregation in schools remains widespread. Housing exclusion continues to trap communities in substandard conditions. And antigypsyism still goes largely unrecognised and unaddressed in many national systems.

At the same time, the report also points to what does work. Roma mediators, for example, stand out as one of the few consistently effective tools across countries, especially in health and education. But even these successes are often underfunded and treated as temporary, rather than built into long-term policy.

This is exactly why the Roma Index matters. It doesn’t just describe the situation. It gives civil society, institutions, and decision-makers a shared evidence base to push for stronger, rights-based, and more accountable policies across Europe.
