Today, the European Week Against Cancer puts the spotlight on research. So do we.

is a proud partner of ALTHEA a European initiative working to make mental‑health support a standard and integrated part of cancer care across Europe.

ALTHEA brings together 26 partners across 16 countries to develop a systematic approach to mental‑health screening for cancer patients and caregivers, ensuring that the psychological impact of cancer is identified early and addressed throughout the entire journey.

Living with cancer is not just a physical experience. The fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty, it is a lot to carry. And yet, finding mental health support during cancer is still harder than it should be.

For the European Week Against Cancer, we want to make sure more people know that support exists. GAMIAN-Europe, Cancer Patients Europe - CPE and Association of European Cancer Leagues created the Mental Health and Cancer Hub precisely for this reason. A free platform to find counselling, peer support groups, helplines and more, in your country and in your language.

No one should face this alone. Share this with someone who might need it.

According to the Association of European Cancer Leagues, every 9 seconds someone in Europe gets a cancer diagnosis. And yet, for too many people, the emotional and psychological impact goes unsupported.

This week, for the European Week Against Cancer, GAMIAN-Europe and Cancer Patients Europe - CPE are releasing "Mental Health for Cancer Patients in Europe", a new report to understand what kind of mental health support is available for cancer patients across Europe, where it is missing and what needs to change.

We looked at 291 services across 33 countries. From peer support groups to counselling and clinical care. What we found is a Europe where access to that support depends heavily on where you live.

The report provides clear recommendations and calls on governments, health systems, patient organisations and policymakers to act. Because mental health support should be part of every cancer patient's care.

Our Annual General Meeting brought GAMIAN-Europe members together in Prague on 16 May 2026.

It was a day of reflection, collaboration, and learning as members discussed priorities for the years ahead and shared ideas on how to strengthen mental health advocacy across Europe.

🏆 We were proud to present the Pedro Montellano Good Practice Award 2026 to Federación Salud Mental Castilla y León for their inspiring project, Julia: Rural Women & Mental Health.

🎓 Members also took part in a capacity-building session with Maria Mavris from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), exploring how patient organisations can play a stronger role in medicines development and regulatory processes.

Thank you to all our members and partners for making this AGM such a meaningful and productive gathering.

📣 Let your voice be heard

GAMIAN-Europe is contributing to the TRUSTING project, working with partners including the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) to explore how digital tools can support earlier detection of changes in mental health.

As part of this work, we invite service users and clinicians to share their experiences through the TRUSTING surveys. Your input will help improve understanding of mental health and support the development of better tools for care.
