A strong step forward for more equitable, gender-sensitive cancer policy in Europe.

This new report, led by Billy Kelleher MEP and reflecting ECO’s policy priorities, include calls for:

🔹 More ambitious and equitable cancer screening
🔹 Gender-sensitive screening and vaccination programmes
🔹 Greater access to innovative diagnostics, including biomarker testing
🔹 An EU-wide Right to Be Forgotten
🔹 Stronger action on cancer prevention and health inequalities

Separately, ECO’s latest report ‘Women & Cancer: From Evidence to Action’ sets out recommendations for improving access to diagnostics and treatment and strengthening prevention and early detection.

Europe Losing Its Share of Cancer Trials 📉

In 2008, Europe's share of global oncology trials stood at 41%. By 2023, it had fallen to 21%.

A new report from the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) sounds the alarm. But this is not a story of decline. It's a story of opportunity. 💡

💬 ‘Europe has the science to lead the world in cancer care. What it has lacked is the strategy to match it. Put cancer innovation at the heart of Europe's competitiveness agenda and turn scientific excellence into better outcomes for cancer patients in every member state.’ - Isabel Rubio, President, European Cancer Organisation

To seize the lead, ECO sets out a clear roadmap:
✅ Put oncology innovation at the centre of Europe's competitiveness strategy
✅ Build on Europe's Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission
✅ Resolve regulatory barriers (GDPR interpretation, IVDR, the Clinical Trials Regulation)
✅ Reduce fragmentation so new treatments reach patients sooner

ECO urges the European Commission and EU member states to weigh these recommendations as they shape Europe’s new competitiveness agenda.

Europe is home to world-class research and scientific expertise. Yet regulatory barriers, fragmented clinical research and unequal access can prevent new treatments from reaching patients.

On 12 October, the Expert Dialogue on the EU Biotech Act will bring policymakers and experts together to explore how Europe can:

🔹 Improve the environment for clinical research for cancer and rare diseases

🔹 Strengthen cross-border collaboration

🔹 Support biotechnology innovation and advanced therapies

🔹 Help new treatments reach patients more quickly and equitably

The dialogue is organised by the Secretariat of the European Parliament Intergroup on Cancer and Rare Diseases, comprising the European Cancer Organisation, EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe and SIOP Europe.

On 13–14 October, the SANGUINE project comes to Brussels – and online – with a look at the future of blood cancer detection.

Join us live on YouTube and follow the showcase event from wherever you are.

Just keep in mind: This isn’t a ‘watch and scroll’ kind of livestream.

Online participants can ask questions in real time and be part of the exchange around the HemaChip, the SANGUINE project and what comes next for innovative blood cancer detection.

The stage is getting bigger… and the countdown is getting shorter. ⏳

The SANGUINE Showcase event is shaping up to be as groundbreaking as the technology:

Think interactive exhibition. Live HemaChip demonstrations. SANGUINE goodies. Fresh perspectives. And real opportunities to connect with the people driving innovation across cancer detection, biotech and cancer policy.

Our speaker line-up is also growing. Just take a look.

Whether you come for the science, the technology, the conversations (or all three), this is one event you’ll want to experience.

Awareness is only the beginning.

Organised screening, timely diagnosis and high-quality care depend on health systems that can reach women, follow them through the pathway and deliver consistent standards of care.

In the first expert commentary of our Pink October 2026 series, Dr Isabel Rubio looks at what Europe can do to close the gap between the standards it has developed and the care women actually receive.

🔬 The project brings together expertise from across Europe to investigate aerosolised chemotherapy as a new approach for treating cancers that have spread within the abdomen or around the lungs. 💨

But IMPACT goes beyond testing a treatment. It will combine clinical research with patient involvement, quality-of-life assessment, health economics and implementation research to understand not only whether the approach works, but how it could contribute to future cancer care. 👥📊

🤝 By connecting research, innovation and patient needs, IMPACT aims to generate evidence that can support better treatment decisions across Europe.

October is . 🎗️

Across the WHO European Region, an estimated 9.7 million people live with hepatitis B and 5.6 million with hepatitis C, major preventable causes of liver disease and liver cancer. 👈

Together with our members and partners, we’re working to strengthen prevention, improve awareness and access to testing and treatment, and ensure the link between viral hepatitis and cancer is not overlooked.

This month, along with the European Liver Patients Association, the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the World Hepatitis Alliance, we’re calling for stronger action across Europe to prevent liver cancer before it develops. 💡
