🇦🇱 Albania: The EFJ shares the grave concern raised by our affiliates in SafeJournalists network and Shoqata "Gazetarët Profesionistë të Shqipërisë" APJ Albania (APJA) over the escalating violence against journalists in Albania.

Since 13 October, journalists have been covering a student-led uprising. In just five days, the Asociacioni i Gazetarëve të Shqipërisë AGSH (AJA) has documented at least 17 incidents against journalists and media workers. They have been physically attacked, injured, threatened and obstructed from doing their job. It is particularly worrying that most of these incidents involved the Albanian State Police.

The EFJ stands in solidarity with all journalists affected and echoes the call on the Albanian authorities to take immediate action to guarantee journalists’ safety and their right to report freely.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia

Since 13 October 2026, the Instagram accounts of the outlet Sloboden Pečat, and .mk, have been under a new wave of coordinated inauthentic activity, without interruption for almost 48 hours. This is the fifth wave in less than a year.

When thousands of fake accounts start following or reacting en masse to a media outlet’s content, the platform’s algorithms recognise this as suspicious activity. Similar bot attacks in Serbia resulted in media accounts being temporarily suspended.

The EFJ joins its affiliate, the Здружение на новинарите на Македонија - ЗНМ (ZNM), in calling on the relevant authorities to investigate what appear to be coordinated bot attacks and identify those responsible.

🇹🇷 Turkey

“Türkiye has woken to a bleak day for democracy and press freedom,” Gazeteciler Cemiyeti wrote in a statement today.

Today marks another serious escalation in the crackdown on press freedom in Turkey. Police raided Halk TV, the country’s leading private opposition channel, a government-appointed trustee took control, and its broadcasts were halted. Journalists were prevented from entering their own newsroom. This happened on the very day jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu began his defence in court.

Together with the IFJ - International Federation of Journalists, we join our Turkish affiliates in strongly condemning this grave attack on press freedom and on the public’s right to information. We call on the Turkish authorities to immediately end the trustee appointment and let Halk TV and its journalists get back to work.

After the Maltese government decided to ban protestors from the organisations Repubblika and Occupy Justice Malta from displaying their posters in support of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, some of our members have shown solidarity by bringing these banned posters to the Maltese embassies and consulates in their countries.

Here is Maja Sever, President of the European Federation of Journalists, who will bring this message directly to the Maltese Consulate in Zagreb.

If you would like to join the action, the steps are simple: print the banned poster below, and hang it outside of the Maltese embassy in your country. This way, the original message behind the protests in Malta won’t get lost, but instead expanded all over Europe.

Maltese academic and activist Vicki Ann Cremona stated that “there is a way in which civil rights can be eroded without anyone ever explicitly telling you that you do not have the right to speak”. We will ensure that our civil rights won’t be put at risk any further, and that Daphne’s memory will live on.

🇫🇷 PARIS, FRANCE: Join us tomorrow to pay tribute to Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered on October 16, 2017.

The murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia sent shockwaves through Europe, and eventually led to the EU's SLAPP Directive. This year, on 2 September, the oligarch Yorgen Fenech, the alleged instigator of this murder, was completely acquitted by eight out of nine jurors. This verdict has reactivated a strong citizen mobilization in Malta and in Europe.

Today, everywhere, journalists are threatened with death. Fighting together against impunity for crimes against journalists is more than necessary.

✊ The journalists' unions, SNJ, Snj-cgtCGT, CFDT-Journalistes, the European and International Federations of Journalists (European Federation of Journalists - EFJ and IFJ - International Federation of Journalists), the French Whistleblower Center (Maison des Lanceurs d'Alerte) and Reporters sans frontières / Reporters Without Borders / RSF are organizing a roundtable, open to the public, with the participation of Sherpa, the European Parliament and Maltese living in France.

Soutien au journaliste de Mediapart Antton Rouget, cible d'une campagne de dénigrement menée par le . Des méthodes d'intimidation visant à discréditer la crédibilité des révélations d'intérêt public impliquant le président du RN Jordan Bardella, et à détourner l'attention.

Nous avons publié une alerte sur la plateforme Mapping Media Freedom pour dénoncer les propos graves du porte-parole Laurent Jacobelli et de ses pairs. Un signalement est également en cours sur la plateforme du Conseil de l'Europe (Platform to promote the protection of journalism and safety of journalists).

Comme dénoncé dans notre rapport publié hier avec le Media Freedom Rapid Response - MFRR et le soutien de Reporters sans frontières / Reporters Without Borders / RSF, les attaques visant Mediapart font écho à nos préoccupations concernant le traitement dangereux réservé à la presse, qui affecte non seulement les médias mais le droit à l'information de tous.
