🟡At Euractiv Conference Elli Tsiforou COPA COGECA's Secretary General presented her stance on the EU Fertiliser Action Plan, ETS, CBAM and fertilisers industry.

Commissionner Christophe Hansen importantly warned that they can be no food security without fertilisers security. As European, "we cannot spend the next coming decade going from one fertilisers crisis to the other".

COPA COGECA then expect concrete immediate actions on this Friday's announcements, as the entire farming community is now hit head-on by this fertilisers crisis, entering a zone of uncertainty for crops and yields in the coming years, and farmers are bearing alone an unbearable cost of the fertiliser sustainable transition.

This Fertiliser Action Plan is a step in the right direction, but its implementation could fall short.

This morning, ahead of the AGRIFISH Council meeting, COPA President Massimiliano Giansanti and COGECA Vice-President Florentin Bercu met with Cypriot Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou to discuss the key issues currently shaping the European agricultural agenda.

The exchanges focused in particular on our assessment of the fertiliser action plan presented by the European Commission last week, ongoing discussions on international trade and EU agreements, the concerning ILUC rules for soya, origin labelling and the need to allow flexibility in the rural development payments.

Our two representatives were very clear: on all these issues, and particularly on Fertilisers there is an urgent need to act and to act now with immediate relief! At a time when global geopolitics is being reshaped, agriculture is at the heart of strategic priorities. Europe cannot limit its action to half-measures or simple monitoring mechanisms; it must take concrete action to support its agricultural sector today in order to prevent food crises tomorrow.

We found a minister who was both attentive and proactive. We now expect a strong response from Europe’s agriculture ministers.

Copa and Cogeca welcome the signing of the modernised 🇪🇺🇲🇽 agreement, building on a partnership that already works for agri-food trade and with hope of further improvement.
But hope must come with some caution: the 35,000t TRQ for Mexican honey 🍯is a real worry for EU beekeepers, especially given the cumulative impact of previous trade concessions.

To make this deal work in practice we count on EU and Mexican institutions to👇

✅ Protect GIs effectively on the ground

✅ Make SPS & animal welfare cooperation measurable

✅ Monitor TRQs and cumulative pressure on sensitive sectors

Good trade is built on trust, fairness and enforcement.
We cherish our close contacts with Mexican counterparts
Consejo Nacional Agropecuario and look forward to making this modernised agreement beneficial for agricultural producers on both sides🤝

💢COPA COGECA's reaction to EU Fertiliser Action Plan:
Concern was running high in Strasbourg, where farmers from across Europe had once again gathered for a symbolic action just hours before the presentation of the Commission’s fertiliser action plan. Announced as a response to the severe crisis faced by farmers over the soaring cost of this key input, the plan ultimately unveiled today contains no immediate measures that would give farmers hope of economic relief for the short term with the Middle East crisis, and lacks of firm and ambitious measures in the medium and longer term to provide relief from the multiplication of EU policies artificially increasing fertilisers prices.

⏱️The Fertiliser Action Plan presented today must be implemented without any further delays and complemented by immediate, concrete solutions that match the scale of the crisis.
The European agriculture sector is heading straight towards a fertiliser wall, while the European Union monitors and hesitates when it should be taking action, because otherwise tomorrow it will be all European consumers who will find themselves up against the wall.

The content of the fertiliser plan, to be presented in just few hours, will answer a key question : Will the EU Commission act before Europe enters a full scale agricultural and food production crisis, or will it once again react only after the damage has been done ?

5 months ago, we were thousands in Strasbourg to ask to safeguard European agriculture and food security, backbone of our Union. Today reality check:
📈 Fertiliser prices are skyrocketing
💥Farms already struggling for their competitivity cannot absorb this new shock
The Commission has the tools to bring immediate relief !

🔴LIVE 🚨Today's Fertiliser crisis for farmers = Tomorrow’s Food crisis For consumers

📢Copa Cogeca today announced a mobilisation for May 19, the date on which the European Commission is set to release its Fertiliser Action Plan. This plan, unless there is a rapid change in direction, is unlikely to meet the expectations of the European farming community or address the scale of the crisis that has been unfolding since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran.

The European Commission has both the tools and the means to act in the short, medium and long term. Any delays in taking action in the coming weeks and months, while farmers are already beginning to prepare their stock for the upcoming season, could have major consequences for consumer prices in 🇪🇺 and for our ability to support global food security.
