Copa-Cogeca is the united voice of European Farmers and Agri-cooperatives Copa-Cogeca is the united voice of farmers and agri-cooperatives in the EU.

Together, they ensure that EU agriculture is sustainable, innovative and competitive, guaranteeing food security to half a billion people throughout Europe. Copa represents 23 million farmers and their families whilst Cogeca represents the interests of 22,000 agricultural cooperatives. They have 66 member organisations from the EU member states.

🚨The Irish Presidency of the Council presented its negotiating box for the next long-term EU budget. For Europe’s farmers and agri-cooperatives, the message is brutally clear: the proposed cuts remain, while no credible safeguard has been offered to preserve the CAP’s historic structure, autonomy and common character.
The EU is moving dangerously close to making a grave strategic mistake.

👏Today, European farmers confirmed Massimiliano Giansanti, Italian farmer and President of Confagricoltura, as President of Copa, representing millions of farmers across the EU. His mandate will run for the next two years.

At a critical moment for European agriculture, a strong and united voice will be essential to defend the competitiveness and resilience of European farming.

"The decisions to be taken in the coming weeks will shape the lives of millions of farmers for years to come. After yet another challenging summer, Europe’s farmers are now looking for clear action, not more words. We will fight to defend a strong Common Agricultural Policy, secure an increased budget that keeps pace with inflation, advance the simplification agenda and ensure a coherent EU trade policy. The time to act is now!" reacted Massimiliano Giansanti.

👏Today, the Cogeca Praesidium confirmed Lennart Nilsson, arable farmer from Swedish organisation LRF, as President of Cogeca, representing more than 22,000 agricultural cooperatives across the EU. His mandate will run throughout 2027.
At a decisive moment for European agriculture, with negotiations on the next and post-2027, continued geopolitical uncertainty, persistently high input costs and the impact of recent weather events, continuity and stability will be essential to build on what has already been achieved and prepare European agri-cooperatives for the challenges ahead.
“This spirit of cooperation will be essential in the months ahead. These challenges require policies that strengthen, not weaken, the competitiveness and resilience of European agriculture, with strong agri-cooperatives at the centre,” said Lennart Nilsson.
He will continue to be supported by Cogeca’s six Vice-Presidents: Agnieszka Maliszewska 🇵🇱, Leonardo Pofferi 🇮🇹, Florentin Bercu 🇷🇴, Mickael Marcerou 🇫🇷, Christian Høegh-Andersen 🇩🇰 and Idalino Leão 🇵🇹.

🚧 Extreme drought and heatwaves swept across Europe this summer, putting considerable strain on the livestock sector.
Feedback from Copa Cogeca members in July and August indicates a widespread deterioration in conditions, which is having a devastating impact on our farms, animals, and the entire agri-food chain. While the most severe impacts have been reported in southern, central and western Europe, this is undoubtedly a pan-European crisis with immediate, medium-term and long-term consequences.

🔥 Heat stress, prolonged drought and water shortages have reduced the availability of forage, lowered milk and meat production and jeopardised the reproductive performance of livestock. From France to Hungary, farmers are culling herds early and struggling with soaring feed costs and long-term productivity losses.

23 September was the European Day of Organic Farming, Copa and Cogeca joined forces with the EU Food & Farming
and IFOAM Organics Europe to celebrate some of the best organic farmers across Europe at the 5th edition of the Organic Awards! 🎉

DG Agri Director General Elisabeth Werner: “The EU organic market is the 2nd largest in the world”; with million hectares farmed organically and young farmers leading the charge.

Søren Sødengaard, Copa Vice President and Danish farmer, agreed with the public: "This year was dry and bumpy!”
“Challenges keep farmers up at night- he said. That’s why we must focus on supporting farmers, not just setting targets. We should ask what it is we can do to help organic farmers and make organic farming easier, not just setting targets. Rising costs, limited tools are real hurdles. We need more market opportunities and practical solutions, like extra financial support to cover extra costs as well as reward the environmental and social services organic farmers provide.”

🏆 Kay O’Sullivan, winner of the Best Female Organic Farmer 2026! 👩‍🌾 For 17 years, she has championed organic farming in Mourneabbey, North Cork 🇮🇪 preserving her family’s farm and cattle with dedication. Copa Cogeca’s VP Søren Sødengaard and Emilio Fidora, Vice Chair of our Organic Working Party, were honored to present her with this well-deserved award 🐑

🏆 Hans Erik Lørgensen, winner of the Best Male Organic Farmer 2026, whose Risbjerg Landbrug farm in Fyn 🇩🇰 has thrived for 20 years with 6 000 outdoor pigs and 350 hectares of organic land.
He reminded us: "We need the EU, to produce with common rules." Fairness, clarity and shared standards are essential to keep the sector growing, a sector Europeans know and trust.

Both Kay and Hans Erik are highly experienced organic livestock farmers who merge know-how with innovation to make the most out of the organic production system. They serve as amazing examples of consistency, adaptability, resilience and of course organic principles such as sustainability, biodiversity and focus on animal welfare.

🚧 This summer, extreme drought and heatwaves have swept across Europe, feedback from Copa Cogeca members in July and August shows a widespread deterioration of agricultural conditions, leaving a devastating mark on our crops, farms, cooperatives and along the chain. The most severe impacts have been reported in Southern, Central and Western Europe, but this is clearly a European issue, with consequences in the immediate, medium and long term.
🔥 Heat, prolonged drought, low soil moisture, hail and other extreme events have caused significant yield and quality losses.

While the impacts vary, regional water availability and irrigation access play a critical role💧
Additionally, pests and diseases are thriving as plants grow weaker, while plant protection product availability is decreasing in the EU, leaving farmers even more vulnerable!
We must move from crisis management to genuine climate resilience, secure our food supply, and protect our farmers.

A busy few days in Ireland for Copa Vice-President Jan Doležal & Women’s Committee Vice-Chair Viktoria Östlund !
At the 3rd Youth Policy Dialogue with Commissioner Christophe Hansen, they brought farmers’ voices to the debate on the future EU Livestock Strategy, stressing the key role and the need for a sector that is economically viable, competitive and attractive to the next generation.
They also joined the event, engaging with our Irish Farmers Association colleagues and taking part in discussions and events on the future of European farming🌱🐄

European farming do not need another mention just to check the box. What is missing now is not words, but action that matches the rhetoric.

🇪🇺 farmers need a convincing long-term political vision, stable, implementable policies and predictable support schemes, not further short-term fixes or ad hoc initiatives.

Only such an approach can provide farmers, and in particular the next generation, with the confidence to invest, innovate and secure the future of European agriculture.

The future MFF must recognise food production as a strategic priority, intrinsically linked to Europe’s security, defence and competitiveness.

New instruments such as the European Competitiveness Fund that will be certainly mentioned should support innovation but these instruments must complement, not replace, a strong CAP and a well-functioning Common Market Organisation.

After a disastrous summer, European agriculture is at a critical turning point in many countries, and words alone will not be enough to turn the situation around unless they translate into concrete action on the ground.

🇪🇺🇮🇪 This weekend, ahead of the Informal Council of Agriculture Ministers in Dublin, Copa and Cogeca Presidents Massimiliano Giansanti and Lennart Nilsson, alongside Secretary General Elli Tsiforou and Irish Farmers Association' President Francie Gorman, met on the Horgan family dairy farm with Thomas Byrne, Irish Minister of State for European Affairs on crucial EU discussions on the next MFF and CAP.

This farm is a powerful and concrete example of how the CAP, investment and innovation deliver for farmers, rural areas and economic growth 🐄 Affordable food starts with a strong, competitive and resilient European agriculture.

🌐In a world where food is increasingly used as a strategic weapon, and global powers are strengthening their agricultural sectors for autonomy, resilience, and food security, Europe cannot afford to move in the opposite direction. We need a strong CAP for a strong Europe.

Europe is now at a defining moment. Farmers need a clear political vision, stable policies and predictable support to invest, innovate, attract and maintain the next generation.
