At CBE-GEIE, we believe that the way we communicate can have a significant impact on how people are perceived, supported and given opportunities to grow.
The distinction between saying that someone is “not leadership material” and recognising that they “have not yet developed these skills” may seem subtle, but it reflects two very different approaches. One defines a person through a fixed judgement, while the other recognises the possibility of development, learning and growth.
Promoting more inclusive and conscious communication is therefore not simply a matter of choosing different words. It is also about challenging unconscious biases, creating environments where potential can emerge, and ensuring that opportunities for professional development are accessible to all.
We consider these principles an important part of building more inclusive, fair and forward-looking workplaces.
