Zero Waste Europe

Zero Waste Europe A world where nothing and no one is disposable! Anything that can’t be repaired, composted or recycled will need to be redesigned and replaced or taxed/banned.

Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) proposes to re-design our society in a way that all superfluous waste is eliminated and everything that is produced can be re-used, repaired, composted or recycled back into the system.

In Bordeaux Métropole, an estimated 174,000 tonnes of food waste are sent for incineration every year – that’s one third of all waste in the residual stream 😱

In an effort to avoid this massive loss of resources, the Metropole has been working to divert food waste away from disposal in recent years. In 2025, they established 100 community composting sites in the outer ring, and plan to build a further 300 by the end of 2026!

However, anyone working in a municipality will know that the money side of things has to work as well. And so, the Metropole, with the help of Lumec, decided to test the economics of the status quo of burning food waste against the alternative with 400 decentralised composting sites.

The results? 🤑
Over a 5-year period, the diversion alternative results in a net economic benefit of 193,595 €, yielding significant savings compared to 2.4M € in costs under the status quo. And even in a scenario with a lower participation rate, the costs under the diversion alternative are still lower than under the current disposal model.

Behind every incinerator proposal is a community asking: why us?
And for 22 years, UK Without Incineration Network (UWKIN) has made sure none of them have had to answer that question alone 🔥🚫

Stephanie Yates (Zero Waste Europe's Head of Network & Movement Building) sat down with Shlomo Dowen, coordinator of the UKWIN, to trace how isolated local groups grew into a movement: connected, resilient, and collectively pushing back against incineration across the UK.

Every Easter, thousands of young handball players gather in São João da Madeira, Portugal, for one of the most beloved tournaments in the region. 🏐

But behind the games, another story was unfolding. In 2025, Andebolmania generated over 140,000 litres of waste in just four days. 🗑️ Food went uneaten. Containers piled up. The numbers told a story no one was proud of.

For 2026, the organisers, the municipality, and Portuguese organisation ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável asked a simple question: what if we just did it differently? 💡

Small shifts in how food was served and waste was managed. But they added up: 72% less waste and 52% fewer single-use items. 📉

Not zero waste yet, but proof that even a 2,500-person sports tournament can start to change. One edition at a time.

Over 60 zero waste participants from across Europe (and beyond) came together in one of the most inspiring places we could have chosen: Slovenia, Europe's most zero waste certified country.

Here's a taste of what we got up to:
🌿 An international conference on textile waste and the future of Extended Producer Responsibility in Europe
♻️ Open Space discussions on everything from toxic-free municipalities to environmental justice
🏨 Field visits to the waste management centre in Bled and the zero waste Ribno Alpine Resort
💬 Stories from the network: Digital waste, deposit return systems, textile mapping, separate bio-waste - our members brought real stories of change from across Europe.

🌍 A powerful reminder from GAIA Asia Pacific that our local work is part of a global movement of 1,000+ organisations across 92 countries

But if we're honest? The highlight wasn't any single session or site visit. It was the feeling in the room and the shared hope. The reminder that in a world where this work is getting harder, we are not doing it alone.

We're in Slovenia for our Network-Wide Gathering, and what a place to be🌲🌳🤩

Jaka Kranjc from Ekologi brez meja welcomed us at the textile conference, and the region he calls home has quite the zero waste story to tell.

Did you know that 10 of Slovenia's 19 zero waste municipalities are right here in the Gorenjska region? Bled, Gorje, and Radovljica started their zero waste journey in 2015 and 2016.

Ekologi brez meja put together a blog post about what's happening in Gorenjska. A few highlights:

🥤 Bled: a reuse cup system at public events and a Reuse Festival with a focus on textiles
💬 Kranj: targeted campaigns to inspire responsible behaviour among the area's many visitors
♻️ Škofja Loka: a washable cup rental service for public events, a practical alternative to single-use plastic

Let's celebrate hashtag by speaking up for a Europe that provides prosperity, resilience, and wellbeing for all!

Our ''The European we want'' video brought together the ZWE network to show what it will take to achieve this kind of Europe. It's worth a (re-)watch. 😉

Wondering about the value of belonging to a movement?

One of the most uplifting parts of our 2025 Annual Report is the testimonials from organisations in our network and wider movement about the impact of working with Zero Waste Europe.

From sharing resources and knowledge to seeing zero waste practices expand across a region or country, it's clear that we're much stronger when we're together.

🎊 In April, Portugal officially launched its Deposit Return System (DRS)!

What is a DRS? When you buy a drink, you pay a small deposit that you get back when you return the empty bottle or can. Across Europe, DRS systems consistently deliver collection rates close to 90%, significantly cutting litter, and ensuring high-quality material streams for recycling. 🍶

The Portuguese organisation ZERO has been working towards this for years, together with other organisations such as Retorna and Sciaena.

In this latest blog post written by Larissa Copello de Souza, we share what this launch means for Portugal and for the circular economy across Europe 👉 https://zurl.co/h2Pzh

Next week, ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável will join fellow Zero Waste Europe members in Slovenia, a chance to connect with organisations from across the continent, a good opportunity to share experiences and look at what comes next.
