IAMIC conference 2026 continued...

Our public conference day on Thursday meant talks and panels on the topic of 'The Future of Music in a Changing World' as well as premiere new music performances at Trinity Long Room Hub. We heard from some our members, as well as Irish composers, pracitioners and researchers, on topics ranging from considerations of AI creativity, listening closely to nature, and the future purposes of music centres.

We heard music from Jane O'Leary and Judith Ring performed by , as well as electronic compositions by Jonathan Nangle, then in the evening we experienced two exciting improvised performances - one at RIAMDublin and then one with Kirkos, both of which incorporated clips of music from many of our member centres around the world!

On Friday discussions turned toward matters in our own shared IAMIC future and concluded with an AGM including welcoming our new honorary members.

A successful day 1 of IAMIC Conference 2026, Dublin

Such an interesting day at IMRO hearing from highly-informed specialists in their fields - on topics ranging from the system of paying artists a basic income in Ireland, to the impact of AI on all of our work, followed by an afternoon discussion of how to 'fail better'!

Later we visited Irish Traditional Music Archive and heard from the expert archivists and performers who work there - and heard a few traditional tunes to round off our day. Go raibh maith agaibh!

The IAMIC 2026 Annual Meeting and Conference is hosted by the CMC with support from IMRO Ireland Funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, as part of Cultúr 2026: Sharing Ireland’s Culture, the culture programme for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

"The Future of Music in a Changing World” one-day public conference is presented in partnership with the Music Composition Centre at Trinity College Dublin and Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute. CMC is grateful to ITMA, KIRKOS and RIAM for their collaboration on conference activities.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ave Sophia Demelemester as IAMIC’s new part-time Coordinator.

Ave Sophia brings substantial experience in music sector development, international collaboration, and cultural policy. She is currently serving her second term as Director and Board Member of Music Estonia, the country's music industry development centre and export office. Since 2024, she has also served as General Secretary of the European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE), contributing to the strengthening of European music export, international music policy, and the sustainable development of the music sector. A committed advocate for diversity, international collaboration, and cultural policy, Ave Sophia is Estonia's first KEYCHANGE Ambassador and has served on several advisory, governance and funding bodies within the Estonian cultural sector.

Last week at Classical:NEXT Budapest, IAMIC held a useful session – led by Jonathan Grimes from The Contemporary Music Centre Ireland – that really affirmed the importance of our network and emphasised that exchanging information on how we work, along with the challenges we face, is so essential in these current times.

All member organisations shared a little about their current work – what they're excited about, as well as what they’re concerned about. Many common themes emerged, including: funding challenges; the ways in which artists and organisations are responding (or are able to respond) to conditions in their countries; and the drastic reduction of music education in schools, and how we need to take direct action in providing some of this – a key theme in Ivan Fischer's keynote.

This opportunity to get together during each Classical:NEXT – at a time between our annual conferences – continues to be so valuable to IAMIC’s mission to foster a spirit of openness, diversity and collaboration between international music centres. Thank you to all who were able to make it!

As has become an annual tradition, there will be many IAMIC member centres present at Classical:NEXT in Budapest next week. On Thursday 9th April we’ll be holding a meet-up which will provide opportunities to exchange information and insights among members, as well as to connect with the broader global music world to discuss shared opportunities and challenges.

We’re an international network of organisations that collectively and collaboratively provide information and promote the music of our countries and regions. Anyone interested in these discussions is welcome to join the meeting on Thursday at 14:00:
