The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) extends its congratulations to Prime Minister-elect Nikol Pashinyan and the Civil Contract party on their electoral victory on June 7, 2026. This election stands as a testament to Armenian citizens’ commitment to civic participation, to exercising their fundamental right to choose their leadership through a free and fair electoral process, and to the strength of Armenia’s democratic institutions under the Rule of Law.

AGBU expresses its hope for an era of lasting peace and stability in the region. This opportunity allows Armenia to channel its human capital toward innovation, technological advancement, economic growth, and national security. In that same spirit, we encourage a renewed sense of unity and an atmosphere of goodwill and civility in the free expression of different perspectives and ideas—both within the country and across the worldwide Diaspora.

As always, AGBU remains committed to working with the governing parties and the Armenian people to provide opportunities to help the Armenian homeland thrive and prosper.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the French took control of the region of Cilicia and a large-scale repatriation campaign was organized to send Armenian refugees back to their hometowns. The return to Cilicia symbolized a potential normalcy for the refugees. AGBU worked to create essential infrastructure for socio-economic growth, setting up schools, medical facilities and agriculture investments. Two years later, however, the period of optimism came to an end as Armenians were once again forced to flee Cilicia after the French ceded the region to the nascent Turkish Republic. AGBU leadership reacted quickly, evacuating Armenians and resettling them in Syria and Lebanon.

With the fate of the nation in the balance, and with widespread assistance serving refugees throughout the Middle East, Greece and Cyprus, AGBU leadership knew that rebuilding thriving, post-war Armenian communities depended on reopening AGBU chapters and developing infrastructure in these areas. By 1919, AGBU chapters in Aleppo, Beirut, Baghdad, Damascus and Jerusalem were all up and running, ready to provide educational programs and medical assistance as needed.

The war brought a growing concern among the AGBU leadership about the plight of Armenian women and children, particularly those living in Bedouin tribes. In 1918, AGBU enlisted the assistance of British intelligence services and funded missions to rescue them and bring them back to Armenian communities. Various missions led by Levon Yotneghperian and Rupen Herian resulted in the recovery of hundreds of women and children between June and August 1919.

An early example of AGBU’s impressive and efficient action comes just months after April 24, 1915. In October of that same year, 1,260 children from Musa Dagh were living in tent camps in Port Said. In addition to paying for shelters for all the families, AGBU opened a school with AGBU’s treasurer serving as its principal. The Sisvan School fed, clothed, and educated over 3,000 children by 1917 and eventually became a vocational school. This model of initiating humanitarian aid to address immediate crises, followed by investment in the long-term care of the community, would recur for over a century and continues to be a trademark of AGBU's approach to relief.

AGBU’s expansive work during these years was supported by diaspora contributions and the leveraging of regional relationships. For example, as direct funding from Egypt became impassable, AGBU’s 60 US Chapters became a collection point for American and international funds, directing them to US consulates and humanitarian organizations that served as partners on the ground.

AGBU leadership has a long history of driving global advocacy for the welfare of Armenians. Boghos Nubar, respected both for his professional achievements and service through AGBU, was asked by His Holiness Catholicos Georges V of Blessed Memory to lead the Armenian National Delegation in Paris (AND), which he did from 1912 to 1921.

The AND served as a diplomatic mission advocating for the claims of Armenians of Western Armenia, including various attempts to preserve administrative autonomy for Armenians. The AND also participated in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Sèvres (1920), in collaboration with the Delegation of the Republic of Armenia, which recognized Armenia as a free and independent state, a status superseded by the Treaty of Lausanne.

In its first decade of operations, AGBU stayed focused on improving the socio-economic standing of Armenians across the Ottoman Empire, focusing efforts to promote education and agricultural development. In 1910 alone, AGBU subsidized some 30 schools managed locally, usually in collaboration with the Armenian Apostolic Church. In addition farmers were given the livestock, seeds and tools essential to create self-sustaining communities. Sadly, by 1915, only two schools remained and few Armenian farmers were left in the towns and villages of Anatolia.
