Gran Canaria's push for adapting regulation to Island realities. ๐ดโก
This month, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Consejo Insular de la Energรญa, acting as a Covenant Coordinator, presented a proposal to adapt the electricity market to the realities of the Canary Islands as an EU outermost region.
With six isolated electricity systems, the current market design - built for continental grids - creates barriers to renewable integration, system flexibility, and energy sovereignty. The proposal aims to unlock decarbonisation, increase renewable uptake, and modernise system operation while ensuring investment certainty.
