EIAS EIAS activities include undertaking research studies, issuing and disseminating publications, organising (lunch) briefings, seminars and conferences.

The European Institute for Asian Studies is a Brussels-based Think Tank and Policy Research Centre, which aims to promote understanding between the European Union and Asia. EIAS seeks to provide information to policy-makers in European and other institutions, by bringing academic expertise to bear on EU decision-making with regards to Asia. EIAS also acts as a clearing house for regular exchanges

of ideas between those involved in Asian affairs in the EU institutions, European and Asian academics, diplomats working in the missions of Asian, European and other states based in Brussels and in other parts of the world, the business community, trade unions, non-governmental organisations and other civil society actors, as well as the media. Essential is our keenness to improve understanding of developments in Asia and the appreciation of the importance of the EU's relations with Asia. The EIAS activities are numerous, however in particular acting as a forum for discussion, organising research and disseminating information.

"Chinese banks have established themselves in the EU as key players in financing trade, investment, and business activities between Europe and China. Their special institutional structure in the form of the ‘branch-cum-subsidiary’ model, often established in Luxembourg, allows for high financial flexibility, but also brings regulatory tensions. At the same time, new European regulations on banking supervision, investment control, and economic security are changing the framework of their activities within the union. This leads to challenges and new requirements for a balanced and reciprocal design of EU-China financial relations."

The European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) is set to host a Roundtable Discussion on the occasion of the working visit of leading Members of Parliament from Asia, representing the Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR).

This exchange of views with the APHR delegation on “The State of Democracy in Southeast Asia and the Upcoming Elections in Myanmar: Parliamentary Perspectives and Policy Pathways” will centre around the state of democracy in Southeast Asia, its recent backsliding and the uprising of the youth in the region. The situation in , which continues to have strong implications for , rights, and across Southeast Asia will also be addressed, particularly in view of the upcoming elections.

Suffering from a virtually incurable illness, he passed away on 21 July 2025 at the St-Luc Clinic in Bouge (Namur) on 21 July 2025. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, closest friends and loved ones.
