At a time when anti-rights movements are growing across Europe, strong collective action for children’s rights is more important than ever.

That's why, yesterday, during our General Assembly, it was encouraging to see Eurochild strengthen its network by welcoming 14 new members committed to advancing the rights and well-being of children across Europe.

This continued growth, and the discussions, exchanges, and collective energy at the General Assembly, showed the importance of collaboration, solidarity, and a shared commitment to building a Europe where every child can grow up safe, included, and respected.

While the online world offers valuable opportunities, it also exposes children to serious risks, from grooming and sexual exploitation to cyberbullying and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

Through the Evidence to Protect project, Eurochild worked with the Estonian Union for Child Welfare (Lastekaitse Liit) and Το Χαμόγελο του Παιδιού - The Smile of the Child in Greece to analyse data from child helplines and hotlines.

The findings reveal rising reports of abuse, persistent underreporting, and growing risks for children as they enter adolescence, especially for girls.

Our latest article explores what this evidence tells us about online harms in Europe and why protecting children does not mean giving up privacy. It means understanding that privacy is a cornerstone of safety, dignity and justice for every child.

Today, together with our project partners, we launch our recommendations for better child guardianship systems, which can better support unaccompanied children and their guardians.

The package includes:
📘 an EU-level report;
📍 national recommendations for BG, GR, IT, PL and SK;
📊 summary tables with key challenges, stakeholders and solutions.

We call for:
✔️ sustainable investment in guardianship,
✔️ harmonised training standards,
✔️ stronger legal safeguards,
✔️ better coordination and cross-border cooperation.

Download all these resources here: https://eurochild.org/news/guide-project-launches-policy-recommendations-to-strengthen-guardianship-systems-for-unaccompanied-children/

And don't forget tomorrow, 20 May, to attend the last session from our webinar series, focusing this time on "Legal and psychosocial aspects of guardianship in Poland": https://eurochild.org/event/webinar-series-the-guide-guardianship-talks/

Do we really have to choose between child protection and privacy online?

Data from our members' helplines in Greece and Estonia shows growing online risks, from cyberbullying to sexual exploitation, especially for adolescents and girls. And this reflects a wider trend across Europe.

Privacy isn’t a barrier to safety; it’s a core part of children’s wellbeing, as recognised by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Protecting children online means ensuring both safety and privacy!

Prevention, Participation and Investment! This is the direction we need to take for a stronger Child Guarantee!

One week ago, the European Commission released a communication on strengthening the European Child Guarantee. We welcome the stronger focus on prevention, integrated child-centred support, mental health, online safety, early childhood education and care, and the transition from childhood into adulthood.

The next phase must now focus on CONCRETE delivery!

This requires stronger and revised National Action Plans, systematic use of the European Semester, improved governance and monitoring systems, meaningful participation of children and civil society, and adequate, ring-fenced funding capable of translating commitments into real improvements in children’s lives.

Digital spaces are not safe for children.

Our member, Lastekaitse Liit shared with us the story of a group of 10-year-old children exposed to inappropriate content and harmful contacts online. The children did not wish to inform their parents, but also did not want to keep the situation to themselves.

This case highlights the urgent need for stronger regulation and safeguarding measures to better protect children, as well as the importance of accessible, trusted reporting channels they can turn to when something is wrong.
