How can cultural education institutions protect children from sexualised violence?

Eurochild's German member, BKJ , releases a practical guide showing how the participation of children and adolescents can be put into practice to prevent violence: in projects, workshops, or institutional concepts.

Through Start2Act, BKJ supported more than 250 projects with funding, materials, and training to establish protection concepts and prevention measures.

The new report features examples from funded projects, interviews with professionals and experts, specialist articles, and practical methods.

Where children and young people are allowed to participate, responsibility, trust and self-determination grow!

As we follow the deeply concerning situation unfolding in Ceuta, we want to amplify the message of our Spanish member, Plataforma de Infancia.

Authorities must place children's rights at the centre of the response. Every child arriving in Ceuta must be treated first and foremost as a child, regardless of their nationality, migration status or how they reached Spanish territory. This means ensuring protection, appropriate care, and an individual assessment of each child's circumstances and best interests. Children must never be subjected to collective or automatic returns.

At a time when migration is increasingly discussed only through the language of borders and security, Plataforma de Infancia also warns against narratives that criminalise children on the move.

Behind the figures are children who have crossed dangerous routes in search of safety and a better future. Protecting their rights is a legal and ethical obligation.

On 23 July, the Italian Government approved a draft law that could change how criminal responsibility is assessed for children aged 14–18.

While the minimum age of criminal responsibility would remain 14 and the penalties would not change, the proposal would introduce a significant shift: instead of requiring individual assessment of the child, criminal capacity would be presumed unless proven otherwise.

This comes at a time when there is growing recognition of the profound impact that justice systems can have on children's development, mental health and future.

Europe should invest not in pushing children deeper into the criminal justice system, but in preventing harm, addressing its root causes, and giving every child a genuine path towards a different future.

What's the European Semester? It's the EU’s check-in on the economy. It helps EU countries plan their budgets and policies together, enabling them to work towards shared goals.

Child rights are getting more attention, with new recommendations for Spain and, for the first time, Italy. But the EU is still not on track to lift 5 million children out of poverty by 2030.

The European Child Guarantee is not systematically integrated into country reports and recommendations, and access to quality services and social protection continues to vary widely across Member States.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Theodoropoulou, founder of Eurochild member Roots Research Center Κέντρο Ερευνών Ρίζες

Mary worked tirelessly to improve the Greek child protection system and was a vital member of Eurochild from the network's earliest years. She helped hundreds of adult adoptees look for their biological families. Mary and her organisation participated in many projects, such as the Opening Doors campaign, which called for strengthening families and ending institutional care.

One of her last wishes was that, instead of flowers or other gestures, people would consider donating to her NGO so that the work she devoted her life to could continue: eurochild.org/news/in-memoriam-mary-theodoropoulou
