A donation might take seconds. Building the relationship behind it takes much longer.

And in 2026, that relationship has to work across everything from a handwritten thank-you note to a 15-second video.

That's what Caritas fundraisers from across Europe discussed last week at our annual Fundraising Forum in Antwerp.

We talked about ethical fundraising in emergencies, keeping donors engaged, and using social media to build genuine connections, not just ask for support.

And we saw some great examples from across the network.

Different ideas. Different approaches. One thing in common: turning solidarity into action.

❗Chad is facing a humanitarian crisis that remains largely overlooked.
The country hosts more than 1.5 million refugees - one in every 13 people. Displacement, devastating floods and food insecurity are putting pressure on refugees and host communities, while funding cuts leave many without essential assistance.

Local organisations such as Caritas Chad and diocesan Caritas organisations are supporting affected communities with limited resources. Their experiences, and the voices of the people they serve, must help shape the humanitarian response.

The EU has an important role to play:
▶️ Support local organisations to provide food, education, healthcare and protection.
▶️ Invest in livelihoods, climate resilience and basic services.
▶️ Link humanitarian assistance with development and peacebuilding.

🚨 No crisis should be forgotten. People in Chad deserve sustained attention, solidarity and support.

👉 How can we stay true to who we are while communicating in more participatory, responsible and effective ways as technology and content continue to evolve?

Last week, communications colleagues from across the Caritas Europa network came together in Antwerp for our 2026 Communications Forum!

Over two days, we discussed:

✔️ AI: what it can help us do, where to draw the line, and how to use it responsibly.

✔️ Stories: what changes when people with lived experience have a say in how their stories are told.

✔️ Reach: how young people, influencers and our Caritas identity can help build trust, strengthen our voice and connect with wider audiences.

✔️ How to communicate the EU values in an increasingly polarised world with the European Parliament

👉 Different conversations, one common thread: people need to remain at the centre.

New tools can change how we communicate. New platforms can change where we communicate. But they shouldn't change who we communicate for, or the dignity with which we tell their stories.

💬 Gestaline is 35, a single mother of two and a home care assistant in Grenoble.

She has a job.
She even has a second one.
And still, not enough to live on.

Like her, almost 1 in 12 employed people in the EU are at risk of poverty.

Why is this happening? And what would decent work actually look like?

Last week, we were delighted to join our friends and colleagues at Caritas-Spes Ukraine to celebrate 30 years of accompanying people in need, building solidarity and putting love into action.

The anniversary brought together colleagues, partners and friends from across Ukraine and beyond, honouring the people who have shaped the organisation over the past three decades and those who continue to carry its mission forward through these challenging times.

Congratulations to everyone at Caritas-Spes Ukraine on 30 years of service and solidarity and thank you for all you continue to do for communities across Ukraine. 👏

This World Day of Migrants and Refugees, we join Caritas Internationalis, COATNET, Red Clamor and RAEMH in calling to protect the present and safeguard the future of children on the move. 🌍

Every child should be guaranteed dignity and fundamental rights, regardless of borders, nationality or migration status. Among these rights: the right to family unity.

Yet deportation policies, border controls and restrictive rules keep separating children from their parents and siblings. Such family fragmentation increases children's vulnerability, compromises their emotional and psychological well-being, and constitutes a serious violation of the principle of the best interests of the child. Prolonged separation from parents and caregivers can have lasting consequences for children's development.

That's why we reiterate our call to the EU and its Member States to:
🔹 Recognise family unity as a fundamental dimension of child protection and remove unnecessary legislative and administrative barriers to family reunification
🔹 Expand safe and regular pathways and make family reunification procedures fast, fair, affordable and flexible

Family reunification is a right, not a privilege. And for a child on the move, family is not an administrative detail, it's their first protection.

This week, Caritas Europa joined the annual partners meeting of the Ukraine Country Forum in Lviv.

With around 11 million people in need and attacks intensifying across the country, the humanitarian needs remain immense.

Caritas Ukraine and Caritas-Spes Ukraine, supported by partners across the global Caritas network, continue to stand alongside communities across the country, including on the front lines.

At the meeting, partners reflected on the response so far and discussed how best to support Caritas in Ukraine in the months ahead.

For more than four and a half years, staff and volunteers have been there for people affected by the war, offering practical support, accompaniment and, above all hope and a reminder that they are not alone.

💡 Your innovation could inspire Caritas colleagues across Europe - and there’s still time to submit!

The deadline for the Caritas Europa Innovation Festival 2027 has been extended to 16 October 2026.

We are looking for innovative projects and initiatives from any area of Caritas work, from new approaches and partnerships to different ways of engaging communities, strengthening inclusion or building organisational resilience.

This year, we are particularly interested in fundraising and financial resilience, as well as projects exploring youth engagement and ecological sustainability.

🌍 Building stronger emergency response across Caritas

Last week Caritas Europa and Caritas Asia came together in Astana, Kazakhstan, for their first joint emergency response training, hosted by caritaskazakhstan.

The three-day training brought together 15 participants from seven Caritas organisations across Europe and Asia, creating a space to share experience, strengthen practical skills and prepare for emergencies.

Participants worked through the three key stages of an emergency response:

🔹 Preparedness
🔹 Response
🔹 Closure

By strengthening our capacity to prepare, respond and coordinate, we can make sure that Caritas is ready to support people and communities when emergencies strike.

This week, we were very happy to host the Caritas Europa Parish Caritas Forum in Sweden, bringing together colleagues from across Europe to exchange experiences and explore how to strengthen the role and presence of Parish Caritas, particularly in countries where these structures are less established.

Parish Caritas plays an important role in fulfilling the Caritas mission. Through its proximity to people and direct presence in local communities, it helps us stay close to everyday realities, respond to local needs and turn solidarity into concrete action.

Over these days, we shared experiences, challenges and practical approaches for helping Parish Caritas grow in different contexts, while building a more connected Caritas network.

One message came through strongly: Parish Caritas may look different across Europe, but we are united by a common mission and identity - rooted in the Gospel, human dignity, solidarity and service to people and communities.

We are also grateful for the opportunity to visit Caritas Sverige and learn more about some of their projects such as the “Guardian Angels”, “Humanium metal”, Nordic cooperation on mental health and psychological support, and explore networking opportunities among Nordic countries on Young Caritas.

We leave Sweden with new ideas, stronger connections and renewed energy to continue strengthening Parish Caritas across our network.

A warm thank you to all participants who made these days of sharing and reflection possible!
