Last Tuesday, during our conference "Authors’ Rights and Music Streaming in the Age of AI", we hosted the panel session "Generative AI and Authors’ Rights: Where Do We Stand?".

During this discussion, Dominick Luquer (Secretary General, FIA - International Federation of Actors), Dr. Kai Welp (General Counsel, GEMA), Alain Strowel (Professor, UCLouvain – Université catholique de Louvain), Rodolphe Wouters (Policy Officer, Copyright Unit, European Commission) and moderator Helienne Lindvall (ECSA President) exchanged views on recent EU and national developments in copyright and AI, while assessing the current landscape for music creators and other rightsholders.

Helienne Lindvall stated: "There are solutions – and they all centre around transparency, consent, and remuneration of creators.”

Yesterday, our conference "Authors’ Rights and Music Streaming in the Age of AI" took place at Maison européenne des Auteurs et des Autrices- MEDAA in Brussels.

During several panels, keynotes, and presentations, high-level experts exchanged on the current state of copyright and generative AI regulation in the EU, while focusing on solutions to the challenges faced by music authors today - particularly linked to the relationship between generative AI and authors' rights and the implications of AI-generated music for creators in today’s streaming ecosystem.

🗣️ In her welcome speech, songwriter and ECSA President Helienne Lindvall stated:

"Generative AI companies must act ethically. They must work with us—not profit from our work without consent and at our expense. We therefore call on European policymakers to act with courage. (...) With the European Parliament, we call for an additional legal framework, one that can finally uphold the key principles of transparency, consent and remuneration and encourage a well-functioning licensing market."

🤝 Our deepest gratitude goes out to all panellists, keynote speakers, and policy makers who attended, including European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen and MEP's Emma Rafowicz, Axel Voss, and Hélder Sousa Silva.

Stay tuned for more highlights of the conference’s programme in the coming days.

ECSA welcomes Members of the European Parliament Emma Rafowicz and Alice Kuhnke’s draft report on .

We particularly welcome:

🔸The sector-specific approach and proposal to allocate at least 15% of the programme’s budget to the “Culture - Music strand”, although this should be considered as a strict minimum in order to effectively address the challenges and imbalances impacting the sector;
🔸The emphasis on prioritising human creativity over AI generated works;
🔸The focus on ensuring artistic freedom, fair remuneration and social protection for artists and cultural and creative professionals, including through the application of social conditionality;
🔸The proposal to establish an independent, centralised European Music Observatory that would collect and analyse meaningful comparative data on a regular basis, and across the entire value chain.
