🤩 Thank you to everyone who joined our webinar "Nuclear Energy and Data Centres | Meeting the Energy Needs of Digital Expansion."

⚡⚛️🌐 The discussion brought together experts from EDF and EPRI (ENS Corporate Members) to explore how the rapid growth of infrastructure is reshaping demand, and the perspectives on the role could play in supporting reliable, scalable and low-carbon power systems.

💡 Among the topics discussed:
📍 The impact of and centre growth on electricity demand, and why future energy planning must consider not only the amount of electricity required, but also and it is consumed.
📍 The characteristics of nuclear energy that could support large digital , together with the broader role of low-carbon electricity in enabling digital expansion.
📍 International perspectives and practical insights from the French experience, including current developments, opportunities and challenges at the interface between nuclear energy and data centres.

👏 A special thank you to our speakers Caroline Gatti-Bono (EDF), Daniel Klein, PMP (EPRI), Anne-Lise Laurain (EPRI), and to the moderator Lancelot de Halleux (BNS-YG - Belgian Nuclear Society Young Generation).

📣⚛️🔬 The European Nuclear Society was pleased to contribute to the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Workshop on " Strategies for Deployment: Engaging for the Future", held in .

🎙️⚛️📰 As part of the panel session "Messaging for Trust: How Narratives Shape Public Perception", Kevin Fernandez Cosials, a Youth Member of the ENS High Scientific Council, presented work developed in collaboration with several European Nuclear Society Young Generation Network (ENS-YGN) members, exploring commonly used in discussions around Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), their underlying assumptions, and their implications for stakeholder engagement.

📝⚛️✅ The presentation contributed to a broader exchange on the importance of clear, evidence-based and the role that narratives can play in shaping public understanding of emerging technologies. The workshop brought together experts and stakeholders from different countries and backgrounds to discuss approaches for building , strengthening engagement strategies and supporting informed decision-making in the context of deployment.

🤝🌐👏 We thank the IAEA for organising this timely event and for providing a valuable platform for international dialogue on stakeholder and nuclear communication.

🇸🇪⚛️🔋 Vattenfall (ENS Corporate Member) and Industrikraft Sverige’s nuclear company Videberg Kraft have selected Rolls-Royce SMR as supplier for new nuclear power on ’s at site.

🏗️⚡📋 The decision follows a four-year evaluation process that examined more than 70 options. Once built, the three 470 MW units are expected to generate around 12 TWh of fossil-free per year, equivalent to approximately 6% of Sweden’s annual power consumption.

📈💡⚛️ The project comes as Sweden moves to expand its capacity. In May 2025, the Swedish parliament passed legislation to finance a new generation of reactors, building on the government's 2023 , which targets new nuclear capacity equivalent to at least two large-scale by 2035 and up to 10 reactors by 2045.

📣🇪🇺 📝 ENS submitted its contribution to the European Commission Public Consultation on SA.119469 concerning the construction and operation of six new reactors in . ENS also encouraged its Member Societies and Corporate Members to contribute to the consultation process and share perspectives from across the European nuclear community.

⚛️ In its contribution, developed together with Sfen - French Nuclear Society (ENS Member Society), ENS highlighted the strategic role of nuclear energy within Europe’s system. Nuclear currently provides around one quarter of electricity generation and remains Europe’s largest source of electricity. Looking ahead, achieving European and objectives is expected to require significant investment across the nuclear value chain, including both large-scale reactors and SMRs/AMRs, supported by financing frameworks capable of enabling long-term infrastructure deployment.

💡 ENS also underlined the broader European dimension of nuclear . Beyond national contexts, new nuclear projects can contribute to of supply, grid resilience, industrial development and stronger European supply chains. In this perspective, stable and predictable investment conditions remain an important element in supporting the transition towards a secure, and resilient European system.
