⚛️ Strengthening the Nordic Nuclear Voice ⚛️

🇸🇪🇳🇴🇫🇮 During the Nordic Nuclear Forum 2026 in , representatives of the Suomen Atomiteknillinen Seura / Finnish Nuclear Society (ATS), the Swedish Nuclear Society (SKS) (ENS Member Societies), the Norwegian Nuclear Association, FinNuclear Association, NuclearSweden and the European Nuclear Society came together for a dedicated discussion on how the Nordic community can contribute to the ongoing Nuclear Renaissance in the and across .

🌐 The meeting aimed to identify common ground, shared and , and to explore closer collaborations in the . One message resonated throughout the discussion.
🎙️ As Carl Berglöf, Sweden’s National Nuclear New-Build Coordinator, stated: “We need to bring together. Nuclear devote their lives to nuclear energy, yet they often do not meet each other. We need to remove barriers and create neutral platforms through seminars and workshops.”

🤝 Together, the participating organisations represent a significant part of the Nordic nuclear community, from professionals and scientific to industry and national . All participants agreed that stronger dialogue, increased visibility and closer cooperation can benefit both the Nordic region and the wider European nuclear ecosystem. The discussion will continue, and concrete follow-up actions are already being prepared.

⚛️ The European Nuclear Society is proud to support and facilitate these conversations and looks forward to contributing to an even stronger Nordic nuclear community.

⚛️🇸🇪🏗️ Studsvik (ENS Corporate Member) has submitted an application to the Swedish Government to build between 600 and 1,400 MWe of new capacity at its existing site in , covering two to four light water , with a target of commercial operation in the 2030s.

👷💡🌐 Subject to obtaining permits, the company is targeting commercial operation of the first units in the 2030s. “ has decided to build new nuclear power, and the country needs new firm, capacity on a scale not seen in a generation. Few sites in the country are as ready to contribute as Nyköping,” said Karl Thedeen, Studsvik’s President and CEO.

👷‍♀️⚛️👩‍🔬 This week, ENS Science and Outreach Manager Jadwiga Najder participated in the Joint ICPT-IAEA Women in Nuclear IAEA (WiN IAEA) Workshop on Career Advancement and Professional Growth, closing today in .

🌐 During the panel discussion “Building Global Impact Networks: , and of Women in Nuclear”, Jadwiga shared reflections on the common values that connect nuclear professionals and communities across countries and disciplines. The discussion also highlighted the importance of , and activities in strengthening the future of the sector, topics that are currently the objective of a study conducted by the ENS Focus Group on and engagement.

👩‍🏫⚛️👷 Particular attention was given to the role of nuclear societies and professional in fostering belonging, -sharing and across the sector, while helping connect development, social acceptance and public understanding of nuclear technologies. The exchanges also stressed how local initiatives, international collaboration and representation in outreach activities can contribute to building stronger and more inclusive nuclear .

👏 Many thanks to Women in Nuclear IAEA and to all organisers for the kind invitation and for hosting such inspiring and constructive discussions in Trieste!

⚛️🇨🇭📄 A new report adopted by the Swiss Federal Council concludes that operating the Gösgen and Leibstadt NPPs (both ENS Corporate Members) for up to 80 years would be technically feasible and, for the large part, economically viable, supporting Switzerland’s debate on Long-Term Operation.

🔌🌍🔋 Beyond the economic assessment, Long-Term Operation could help address potential winter shortages, at a time when is reconsidering the role of in meeting climate targets, addressing rising electricity demand and strengthening amid geopolitical uncertainties.

📘⚡🇪🇺 These findings are in line with ENS HSC's recent “On the Importance of Extending the Operation of the Existing European Nuclear Fleet”, which emphasises as a strategic component of Europe’s energy system, supporting energy security, system resilience, economic competitiveness and broader societal objectives: https://www.euronuclear.org/download/importance-extending-operation-european-nuclear-fleet-ens/
