Subject: Suspend EU-Israel Trade Now: End Complicity with War Crimes
Dear EU Leaders,
We are writing to express our outrage and deep concern over the killing and starvation of civilians in Gaza and the EU's ongoing complicity in these atrocities through trade and arms exports. The Israeli government's actions, including the blockade and bombing of civilians, constitute serious breaches of human rights and international law.
As you are aware, Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement requires cooperation to be suspended if one party commits serious breaches of human rights. Israel's actions in Gaza have long surpassed this threshold, with devastating consequences. The UN warns that 14,000 children in Gaza could die unless food and medicine are urgently allowed in. Parents are feeding their kids grass, and babies are dying of dehydration.
We urge you to take immediate action to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, stop all arms exports to Israel, and impose sanctions on Israeli officials and settlers responsible for the blockade and mass atrocities across Palestine. This is not only a moral imperative but also a legal requirement under the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
We are disappointed that the EU has done nothing to hold Israel accountable for its actions. The EU's failure to act is a dereliction of duty and a betrayal of the trust placed in you. We expect the EU to act on our behalf, upholding the values and principles you've been elected to represent.
As the EU has done with Russia, we demand that the EU start a similar campaign to hold Israel accountable, including a boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign.
Double standards are unacceptable. The EU must condemn all human rights abuses, regardless of their origin, and apply the same standards to all countries and actors. The EU's credibility and moral authority depend on its ability to uphold human rights and international law consistently and impartially.
Countries like Ireland and Spain are already taking steps to ban trade with Israeli-occupied territories and impose an arms embargo on Israel. We urge you to follow suit.
We hope that you will respect our requests and take immediate action to end the EU's complicity in Israel's war crimes. We will be watching closely to see what actions you take in response to this crisis, and we will continue to advocate for justice and human rights for the people of Gaza.
Sincerely,
The European Ethical Green Society.
