Why were arboretums created in the first place? 🌳

During our visit to the Arboretum of Bertrix, in Belgium’s province of Luxembourg, Pierre took us back to the origins of these remarkable living collections.

Arboretums were created to bring together, cultivate and observe trees and other woody plants from different regions of the world. Beyond their beauty, they became places of study and comparison — allowing botanists, foresters and horticulturists to see how species grew, adapted and performed away from their native habitats.

Today, these collections also preserve botanical knowledge, genetic diversity and a living record of our long fascination with trees.

We were all prepared for a day in the rain… but weather had other plans. ☀️🌳

For the first day of our dendrology weekend in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, we were treated to beautiful weather and a wonderfully gentle September sun.

Our first visit took us to Daniel and Laura family arboretum, where they shared, with infectious enthusiasm, the story of a family estate nurtured and expanded across generations.

This remarkable collection did not appear overnight: it grew through years of dedication, hard work and countless weekends sacrificed to planting, tending and simply making the place what it is today.

But beyond the trees themselves, there was something about this peaceful place that seemed to awaken childhood memories in many of us.

The simple pleasure of wandering through woodland, pushing through brambles, getting scratched along the way… and carrying on because, as children, we were convinced that somewhere just beyond the next tree there might be a hidden treasure.

Perhaps that sense of discovery is something dendrologists never entirely grow out of. 🌿

Our members have their heads in the leaves. 🌿

And quite literally.

Looking up into a canopy, examining a leaf, noticing an unusual branching pattern or trying to identify a tree from one tiny botanical clue — this is what dendrology looks like in the field.

Because the closer you look at trees, the more there is to discover.

Some people walk through an arboretum. Others read it like a living library.

Our visit to Bokrijk became far more than a simple walk among trees. Guided by Sven — an endless source of botanical knowledge and contagious energy — every corner of the arboretum revealed another story, another species, another detail waiting to be noticed. Even beneath the intense summer sun, his passion never faded for a second.

This reel is a small glimpse into that atmosphere: piano melodies, shifting light, remarkable plants, and the quiet joy of learning from someone who truly knows how to observe the living world.

Magnolia ‘Butterflies’

This luminous bloom stopped me in my tracks today at the Arboretum of Eeklo. A cultivar that feels almost unreal in spring light — buttery petals, a delicate fragrance, and that understated elegance only the Magnolia genus can deliver.
