Dear Commissioner Kos,
Dear High Representative Kallas,
I am writing on behalf of For Bosnia regarding the recent events in Serbia following the death and burial of Ratko Mladić.
We are concerned by the involvement of public authorities, State resources and military structures in the transfer, commemoration and burial, as well as by the wider issue of the public glorification of a person convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Our letter does not concern private mourning or private attendance. It focuses on the distinction between private conduct and conduct involving public institutions or resources, and on how such conduct should be assessed in light of the EU’s existing enlargement framework.
In view of the positions already expressed by the Commission, the EEAS, the Council and the European Parliament, we believe these developments deserve to be documented and reflected, where relevant, in the EU’s political dialogue and accession monitoring.
I am attaching our letter and a short policy note setting out the main legal and institutional references.
I would be grateful if you could take these concerns into consideration and keep us informed of any follow-up you consider appropriate.
Kind regards,
Adem Pobric
