"Inclusion in sport is very important for people with intellectual disabilities because it helps to develop as person, to increase self-esteem and to belong to a group, to make new friends. We all want a full life in the community!"
Andreea Herbei, self-advocate and athlete with intellectual disability, said this at the Youth Dialogue event in Brussels, where she met with Glenn Micallef - European Commissioner for Sport, Youth, and Culture.
👩🦽➡️Ms. Herbei is Co-president of Ceva de Spus, a woman with intellectual disability and a wheelchair basekball athlete. 🏀 She made sure inclusion was a topic on the agenda.
Together participants discussed:
💫 The important role sports play for personal development
💫 The importance of inclusion in sport
💫 How to make sport more inclusive
For anyone who has ever played a team sport... You know how good it feels to be part of a team, to belong to a community that comes together by choice, just for the fun of it... or the competition.
People with intellectual disabilities want the same.
To learn and to teach skills, team-spirit and boundaries.
And they have a right to be included.
Thank you Andrea Herbei and Glenn Micallef for working to make this right a reality!
