"Inclusion in sport is very important for people with intellectual disabilities because it helps to develop as person, to increase self-esteem and to belong to a group, to make new friends. We all want a full life in the community!"

Andreea Herbei, self-advocate and athlete with intellectual disability, said this at the Youth Dialogue event in Brussels, where she met with Glenn Micallef - European Commissioner for Sport, Youth, and Culture.

👩‍🦽‍➡️Ms. Herbei is Co-president of Ceva de Spus, a woman with intellectual disability and a wheelchair basekball athlete. 🏀 She made sure inclusion was a topic on the agenda.

Together participants discussed:
💫 The important role sports play for personal development
💫 The importance of inclusion in sport
💫 How to make sport more inclusive

For anyone who has ever played a team sport... You know how good it feels to be part of a team, to belong to a community that comes together by choice, just for the fun of it... or the competition.

People with intellectual disabilities want the same.
To learn and to teach skills, team-spirit and boundaries.

And they have a right to be included.

Thank you Andrea Herbei and Glenn Micallef for working to make this right a reality!

🗣️ Inclusion Europe’s work is all about people.
It is done to represent people, to improve peoples’ lives.
And it is done by people.
Here is how some of us saw this work in 2025....

🚀 This is how our 2025 annual report 2025 starts.
As you can tell... we did something different.
We went back to the roots. We went back to who and what this is all about.
People.
Their stories, their messages, their work for an inclusive Europe in which every person can live a good life.

🎱 2025 was a wild year.
It was a year of hard work, of strong messages and shared purpose.
The highlight being Hear Our Voices! self-advocacy conference, which took place across 18 different countries.

✅ The annual report was approved last week during Inclusion Europe's General Assembly in Vicenza, where many of our community came together for Europe in Action conference.

🪄 You can read it now to look back at all that happened last year, to learn more about Inclusion Europe's work or if you are just interested in the stories of those that try to make inclusion a reality in Europe every day.

“Change is happening, and change is possible” – Maureen Piggot

Europe in Action ended a week ago.

We heard from so many of you and your words have stayed with us!

You told us what it meant to be part of a community of people who understand that inclusion matters in every part of life. To see, and to realise just how big, how determined and how important this movement truly is. And to be reminded of how many of us work for inclusion everyday, bringing hope to everyone within it.

We felt it too. Every time.

Since we’ve left, we’ve been hard at work to find answers and solutions to the questions raised by you all. Because questions asked by parents, self-advocates, family members, colleagues and other participants deserve more than just answers. They deserve concrete and lasting solutions.

Maureen Piggot, former Inclusion Europe president, asks one of those questions in this video. It’s a question that has been asked many times before. And, yes, there are answers but answers don't always equal solutions. And answers without action change nothing.

This is where our movement comes in. We are not here to repeat what we already know. We want action. Concrete, visible and meaningful action driven by a powerful community, committed to bring about change. Because only action will lead to the progress.

Europe in Action proved it once again. We not only have the answers, but we hold the solutions. And we are ready to make them a reality.

So come and ask us, and make use of this incredible movement we are!

Families carry a lot. And often they carry alone.

Today, on the International Day of Families, we want to remind everyone to look out for siblings or parents of someone with an intellectual disability and ask them how they're really doing. Community matters. Especially to families that need support.

If you want to know more about how family members are doing, read the first essay of our Young Families Project that is out now. You can find it on our website at www.inclusion.eu

🎉 Big day today for representation of people with intellectual disabilities! 🎉

Joachim Busch and Soufiane El Amrani become the first persons with intellectual disabilities to be elected to the Board of the European Disability Forum.

🇪🇺
Soufiane El Amrani was nominated by Inclusion Europe, and is elected among the Board members representing European disability organisations.

“I am happy to be elected, it is a proud moment for me. Thank you to EDF members,” said Soufiane El Amrani.
“In my work as Board member, I want to make information easy to read and improve accessibility and participation.
“My other big priority is for Europe to stop putting people in institutions. Everyone needs to be able to live in their own home and in the community as everyone else.
“I am looking forward to the work.”

🇩🇪
Joachim Busch was nominated by the German disability council, and is elected among the Board members representing national disability organisations.

“I am happy that I got elected and that I can contribute with my experience to the EDF Board,” Joachim Busch said.

Both self-advocates were elected at EDF’s General Assembly in Cyprus.

Congratulations to both Joachim and Soufiane!

We are proud to be part of this historic moment for representation of people with intellectual disabilities 💪

—-
Gunta Anca was elected as President of the European Disability Forum.
Congratulations to Gunta, and to all newly elected Board members.
