How is Tromsø in Norway shifting the paradigms for remote and rural youth work? 😃🇳🇴📣
We were lucky to participate in this year’s Europe Goes Local annual conference, which gathers over 120 youth workers across European countries.
This network project is the largest in Europe, consisting of 35 members - National Agencies for Erasmus+ programs and organizations and over 300 municipalities, youth centers, and NGOs.
The chosen location for this event was Tromsø in the Arctic region of Norway, the city that is this year’s European Youth Capital. 💫💕
We got to witness how is one municipality, like Tromsø managing and developing its youth work. Tromsø acts as a regional hub, overseeing youth work for 35% of Norway’s territory and 9% of the population living there.
The city’s age is - young! 45 % of the population falls into the youth category (14-34).
The EGL conference was an eye-opener on many topics, such as youth work in remote and rural areas and its role in engaging youth in such remote local communities, whether it is a village, an island, or a periphery.
What is common for these areas is that they appear to be far from the urban political centers, might feel@isolated and disconnected and not so capable to influence the youth work policies and frameworks. 📍
But in the case of Tromsø, this is not an obstacle, but a potential for a higher level of youth participation, active citizenship, and continuous support to the quality development of youth work.
Youth workers work hand in hand with the young people and care about their region, pushing socially engaging and innovative initiatives that are sustainable and nature-conscious.
The participants had a chance to visit different local projects/organizations in which youth work has thrived in Tromsø since the 1990s and where the youth’s needs couldn’t be ignored.
We were in:
