Today is 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, and we want to shine a light on the vital role informal carers play in supporting people living with multiple sclerosis, and on the importance of ensuring they are supported by strong, well-functioning healthcare systems.

Informal carers should not have to compensate for gaps in the healthcare system. Healthcare professionals need more the time, tools and support to provide the specialised care people with MS need.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Our 2024 MS Nurse PROfessional workload survey highlighted an important barrier: 𝟲𝟲% 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗦 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀. This means less time for psychological support, social benefits advice and coordination with the wider care team.

One of our key policy asks is therefore clear: 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗠𝗦 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. This means better digital tools, affordable access to advanced training and streamlined administrative processes.

For people living with MS, patient safety also depends on how well care is coordinated and whether healthcare professionals are supported to use their expertise effectively.⁣
Our 2024 survey of 108 MS nurses across 15 countries highlighted the need for change:⁣
