The October session will focus on elite controllers. Dr. Ezequiel Ruiz-Mateos (Spain) will present the mechanisms behind the loss of virological and immunological control, while Prof. Nicolas Noël (France) will focus on clinical management and the open question of ART initiation in this subgroup. The discussion that follows between them and the audience will be facilitated by Dr. José Ignacio Bernardino (Spain).

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The second and final day of the EACS Standard of Care Meeting for HIV & Co-infections in Europe brought the discussion towards equity, policy and implementation.
We focused on:
- Stigma in healthcare settings
- Advancing equity for marginalised communities, including migrants, Roma communities and people experiencing homelessness
- The role of policies and actions in creating more inclusive HIV care
- How Standards of Care can influence national policy and country-level action
- The essential role of communities in advancing equitable, person-centred care
- HIV prevention and treatment access, bringing together clinical, public health, community and harm reduction perspectives

The meeting closed with a clear message: standards matter, but their impact depends on implementation, political commitment and meaningful community engagement.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘂𝗺

The first day of the EACS Standard of Care Meeting for HIV & Co-infections in Europe brought together clinicians, public health experts and community representatives to look at how we can strengthen HIV care across Europe.

We explored:
- Regional differences in HIV epidemiology and access to prevention and care
- Experiences of living with HIV in Hungary and Albania
- Public health perspectives and local challenges
- The ECDC/EACS Standards of HIV Care and their implementation
- Audits for the HIV Testing and PrEP modules
- How standards can translate into meaningful improvements in national healthcare systems

A strong theme throughout the day was the need to turn standards into action, while taking account of the different realities across European countries.

Tomorrow, we turn our focus to stigma, equity, political commitment and HIV prevention and treatment access, with communities playing a central role in shaping the discussion.

The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) is bringing together clinicians, public health experts, policymakers and community representatives for the EACS Standard of Care Meeting for HIV & Co-infections in Europe, taking place on 8–9 October 2026 at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. Under the theme “Standard of care: in the Full Continuum”, the meeting will examine how European standards can be translated into effective policy and practice, with a particular focus on reducing regional disparities and strengthening HIV prevention, testing, treatment and long-term care across Central and Eastern Europe.

The Budapest meeting builds on the previous EACS Standard of Care Meeting, held in Athens in October 2024, and continues EACS's work to bring together different perspectives on the quality and accessibility of HIV care across Europe. This time, the countries in focus are Hungary and Albania. The EACS Standard of Care Working Group aims to collect and share information on progress and challenges in different European regions and to provide a platform for collaboration between healthcare professionals, stakeholders and communities.

Join us for the 15th WAVE in online workshop

On 24 and 25 September 2026 (16:00 - 17:45 CEST), the 15th WAVE in Ukraine online workshop will be held. The series started with an onsite meeting in 2019 and has continued online since 2021.

This time, the workshop will focus on Opportunistic infections in women with advanced HIV disease (Thursday 24 September) and Challenges of late presentation in in Ukraine (Friday 25 September).

The workshop will be available in English and Ukrainian.
