👥Union Gathering TUČEPI 2026 – Strengthening Unity, International Cooperation and the Future of Trade Unionism

The National Police Union of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia successfully organized its traditional Union Gathering 2026, held from 27 to 31 May 2026 in Tučepi, bringing together approximately 400 union members, their families, guests and partners.

On 28 May 2026, a meeting of the Central Board of the National Police Union was held, during which members discussed the future direction of the union’s development, operational priorities and new projects aimed at improving the position and interests of its membership.

This year’s gathering was particularly significant as NSP hosted representatives of European police unions and members of EU.Pol, the umbrella organisation of police unions within the European Union, for the first time.

The distinguished international guests included:

• Jochen Kopelke, President of the German Police Union Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP) and President of EU.Pol;

• Andreas Rinnert, Chairman of the Saarland Regional Association of the German Police Union Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP) and Member of the EU.Pol General Assembly;

• Sibylle Krause, Member of the Federal Executive Board of the German Police Union Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP) and Member of the EU.Pol General Assembly;

• Joan Bueno, Secretary General of the Catalan Police Union Sindicat de Policies de Catalunya (SPC) and Member of the EU.Pol General Assembly;

• Rui Neves, Vice-President of the Portuguese Police Union Sindicato Independente dos Agentes de Polícia (SIAP) and Member of the EU.Pol Executive Board.

The participation of international partners enabled NSP members to engage directly with colleagues from other European countries and exchange experiences regarding the status of police officers, trade union organisation and the challenges currently faced by police unions across Europe.

On 30 May 2026, the International Police Union Partnership and Networking Meeting was held in the conference hall of Hotel Alga in Tučepi. During the meeting, participants were addressed by Bono Tomašević, President of the National Police Union of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia, and Jochen Kopelke, President of EU.Pol, who presented the activities of their respective organisations and emphasized the importance of international cooperation among police unions.

Through the organisation of this year’s Union Gathering, the National Police Union once again demonstrated its commitment to providing high-quality opportunities for its members, promoting unity and professional development, and strengthening international cooperation.

🤝 Strengthening cooperation across Europe

The Swiss Police Federation (VSPB), a member organisation of EU.Pol, was pleased to welcome Jochen Kopelke, President of EU.Pol, for an exchange on current security policy challenges in Europe.

A key topic of discussion was the VSPB's thematic conference: «Federalism: An Obstacle to Internal Security?» Participants exchanged views on how different federal structures influence police work, cooperation between authorities, and the ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats.

During his visit, Jochen Kopelke also congratulated Emmanuel Fivaz on his re-election as President of VSPB and Gerhard Schaub on his re-election as Vice President. Both continue to serve as effective members of EU.Pol and play an important role in representing police professionals at the European level.

The meeting highlighted the value of dialogue, mutual support, and strong international cooperation between police organisations.

Together, we remain committed to strengthening internal security and giving a strong voice to police officers across Europe.

The Future of Security in Europe 👩‍✈️👮

On May 7th, the conference “The Future of Security in Europe” brought together leading experts and decision-makers from across Europe. EU.Pol and our colleagues from Siap Sindicato and ANSG organized this conference, and we sincerely thank you for making all this effort.

The event was moderated by João Fernando Ramos, Director TVI Norte, and featured contributions from:

• Hans Leijtens, Executive Director, Frontex
• Luis Carrilho, National Director, Public Security Police
• Jochen Kopelke, President EU.Pol and Gewerkschaft der Polizei Germany
• Pedro Moura, General Coordinator of the Foreigners and Borders Coordination Unit (UCFE)
• Marco Cruz, Commander, Coastal and Border Control Unit
• João Mortágua, Director Business Development, Critical Software
• Michel Öz, Secretary General EU.Pol and International Strategic Adviser on Police Cooperation for the Limburg Police Unit, Netherlands

The congress was officially opened by Secretary of State for Home Affairs, Dr. Paulo Ribeiro and Dr Pedro Duarte, President of Porto City Council. The presence of the EU Ambassador to Portugal Sofia Moreira de Sousa underlined the European importance of the event.

Ultimately, the conclusion by EU.Pol president Jochen Kopelke was clear:

"Security in Europe can only be achieved together. Strong, professional police work saves lives, so that people can live freely, be themselves, and not be afraid for their safety."

To make this possible, police officers themselves must feel safe, supported, and properly facilitated to do their work.

This conference reinforced what EU.Pol stands for: cooperation over fragmentation, operational reality over theory, and a Europe where safety is a shared responsibility.

Visible, Connected, European: EU.Pol at the EPC Berlin

Last week, our colleagues Fatiha and W***y represented EU.Pol at the European Police Congress in Berlin. 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️

The EU.Pol booth was hosted within the stand of the Gewerkschaft der Polizei - GdP Bundesvorstand, the German Police Union. A sincere thank you to our colleagues for their support and hospitality throughout the congress.

Fatiha representing the French police union Alternative Police Nationalece, and W***y attended the event on behalf of EU.Pol. Their presence ensured that EU.Pol was visibly represented at one of Europe’s most important policing and security events and gave visitors the opportunity to exchange directly with EU.Pol representatives.

A special moment during the congress was the visit of Member of the European Parliament Lena Düpont. She highlighted the strong cooperation with EU.Pol and spoke very positively about the Intergroup Police event held at the European Parliament in March this year. In particular, she emphasized the relevance of the topic discussed and the impressive participation of police colleagues from across Europe.

Events like these strengthen cooperation, visibility and dialogue between police professionals and European institutions. 🤝🇪🇺

Together for a safer Europe!

From Steel to Security. 76 years ago today, Robert Schuman laid the foundation for modern Europe. What began with coal and steel is now a community of values, peace, and close cooperation. 🤝

Why it matters for us in the police: Freedom and security aren't a given. Criminality doesn't stop at borders. That’s why a strong Europe needs a strong police voice in Brussels! We are active and we ensure that the reality of police work reaches European legislation.

What EU.Pol fights for:

✅ Better Working Conditions: Mental health support and fair standards.
✅ Protection on Duty: A Europe-wide stand against violence towards officers.
✅ Digital Innovation: Interoperable systems and responsible use of AI.
✅ The Future: Tackling staff shortages and promoting diversity.

A strong start to the EU.Pol General Assembly!

Around 60 effective members have gathered to kick off this year’s General Assembly in a warm and inspiring atmosphere. Great conversations, strong European police solidarity, live music and an important premiere made the opening truly special. 🎶🤝

For the very first time, the EU.Pol Police Award was presented. The award recognises individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to policing or to trade union activities within the police sector.

This inaugural award was presented to Vakkas Soyudogan from Germany. A man whose work spans the streets of his city, the training rooms of the Federal Police, the digital channels that reach a generation, and the very heart of European values. A man who, since 2017, has dedicated himself, voluntarily, tirelessly, and with great heart, to his colleagues, to the next generation of officers, and to society as a whole.

More about the award and this year’s General Assembly will follow in the coming days.

We also officially welcomed three new member organisations into the EU.Pol family:

• SCSI/CFDT – Syndicat des Cadres de la Sécurité Intérieure
• ANSG/GNR – Associação Nacional de Sargentos da Guarda
• NOSP – Nezávislý odborový svaz Policie České republiky

EU.Pol would also like to sincerely thank our member organisations SIAP and ANSG for their hospitality and support throughout the event. 🙏

👮👮‍♀️Together with police and security officials from more than 30 countries, an international police delegation is sending a clear signal in support of protecting Jewish communities and jointly combating antisemitism.

“As police, we bear a special responsibility worldwide to protect Jewish people and to take decisive action against antisemitic crimes,” emphasises EU.Pol President Kopelke. “Especially in times of war and a worrying rise in antisemitic incidents, we must renew our shared commitment to remembrance and to the active protection of Jewish communities. The ‘March of the Living’ is a powerful symbol of this responsibility.”

This year’s commemorative events are particularly shaped by the impact of global conflicts and increasing antisemitic violence. Fifty Holocaust survivors aged between 90 and 100 will lead the march. They will be accompanied by survivors of more recent antisemitic attacks from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The closing ceremony at the former Birkenau camp will conclude with the lighting of the “Torch of Renewal” by Holocaust survivor Sami Steigmann (New York).

“It is our duty as police not only to ensure security, but also to take a stand,” Kopelke continues. “The march reminds us that antisemitism, racism and hatred must never have a place in our society — neither then nor now.”

EU.Pol stands united behind this international signal of solidarity and responsibility. Together with its partner organisations across Europe and worldwide, it is committed to protecting Jewish institutions, upholding democratic values and fostering a living culture of remembrance. Participation in the march builds on the founding of the transatlantic initiative “Not on Our Watch – A Democratic Policing Initiative”, in which EU.Pol plays a leading role in democratic education for police officers.

We don’t just show up, we reflect on where we can improve and what we can learn. 💡

Listen to our President, Jochen Kopelke, as he shares his thoughts after our visit to the European Parliament for the Intergroup on Police on March 4, 2026.

“As President of the European Federation of Police Unions, I am very proud that we set up a huge group of police officers at the European Parliament. We talked through what happened that day in Parliament, what where the main issues, what is our goal of our federation for our colleagues on duty, on the streets, and in the offices. Stay safe and keeping people safe.”

Our mission remains clear: to support those who keep people safe, while ensuring they stay safe themselves.👩‍✈️🧑‍✈️👮‍♀️👮

Last week, around 50 members of EU.Pol visited the European Parliament 👮🏻‍♀️👮🏽‍♂️

The Intergroup Police, chaired by MEP Assita Kanko and vice-chaired by MEP Lena Düpont, MEP Malik Azmani, and MEP Jeroen Lenaers, hosted an event on the topic of “Before borders and battlefields: How the police is central to Europe’s security.”

EU.Pol is very pleased about the establishment of an Intergroup Police in the Parliament and that our members, the police officers in Europe, are being heard in politics.

Thank you all for coming🙏🏼

Today is International Women’s Day. And yes: women belong in policing, for a long time now, naturally and with full competence.
Today, five colleagues from politics, the association and the police share their statements: honest, clear, straight from everyday experience. EU.Pol feels very fortunate that diversity is a given for us and that we actively promote mixed teams.
Thank you to all policewomen and to all women working in unions and politics for your commitment, every single day. 👮‍♀️💜
