Take your left hand, the inner part facing towards your face and move it in a wave movement up and down - this means ‘immigration’ in American Sign Language. The movement describes pretty much how the journey of a migrant must look like: an up and down from hope to disappointment, because Europe might sometimes look welcoming and sometimes rather stern towards migrants and refugees.
With this campaign we wanted to put a spotlight on happenings and migratory laws in Europe that are not just, to wake people up on how they can create a more welcoming and therefore better Europe and to get the topic, that very often is forgotten about in public, back into people’s mind.
We hope that all of us keep that gained knowledge, don’t forget the stories we shared and are continuing to raise awareness on social injustice towards migrants and refugees in Europe.

On this World Day, we stand together to raise our voices against the heinous crime of human trafficking.

💔 Human trafficking remains a grave concern worldwide, and Europe is not immune to this tragedy. The most common crime after the trade of drugs and weapons is the trade of human beings which is alarming. According to recent reports, thousands of individuals fall victim to trafficking within European borders each year. These numbers are not just statistics; they represent real lives shattered by exploitation, manipulation, and brutality.

🚨 Trafficking in persons is a deeply hidden crime, with many victims suffering in silence. It is crucial to break this cycle of silence and create awareness. By shedding light on this issue, we can help identify and rescue victims, while holding perpetrators accountable for their reprehensible actions.

❌ The purposes of trafficking victims are horrifying and varied. Many are forced into s*xual exploitation, becoming victims of s*x trafficking rings that profit from their suffering. Others endure forced labour, working under oppressive conditions in various industries, while their freedom and dignity are stolen from them.

But how is this related to migration? The line between migrant-smuggling and human trafficking is thin because many people in hopeless situations become victims of smugglers and get trafficked while only being promised a brighter future in another country. It is crucial to not recognize how close both crimes are since scientists say that Human trafficking is inherently exploitative, whereas migrant smuggling is only incidentally exploitative.

Anyhow, too many governments are turning a blind eye to this global crisis and push away their responsibility towards NGOs and Human Aid Organizations. We are calling for to stand up for the rights and well-being of trafficking victims. We must support survivor-centred approaches that provide comprehensive assistance, rehabilitation, and legal protection to those who have escaped this modern-day slavery.

Syrian refugees face with :
Border Closures: Stricter border controls and temporary closures in several European countries have made it harder for Syrian and other refugees to enter and seek asylum, in response to the increased influx of refugees.

Asylum Application Backlogs: The large volume of asylum applications from Syrian refugees, coupled with resource constraints, has caused substantial processing backlogs, leading to extended periods of uncertainty and difficulties for the refugees.

Inadequate Reception and Accommodation: The influx of Syrian refugees has overwhelmed certain countries, resulting in inadequate reception facilities, overcrowding, substandard living conditions, and limited access to essential services.

Risky Sea Crossings: Syrian refugees seeking to reach Europe often embark on dangerous sea journeys, especially across the Mediterranean, in overcrowded and unsafe boats, exposing them to the risk of drowning and other life-threatening hazards.

Humanitarian Crises at Borders: Humanitarian crises have occurred at specific borders, leaving numerous refugees stranded in dire conditions, underscoring the urgency for coordinated and compassionate responses to safeguard their well-being and protection.

Anti-Immigrant Sentiments and Policies: Anti-immigrant sentiments and policies in certain European countries have resulted in heightened hostility and difficulties for Syrian refugees, encompassing growing xenophobia, discrimination, and limitations on their access to social and economic rights.

🎬“In this world” directed by Michael Winterbottom is a thought provoking drama which talks about the dangerous journey of Afghan refugees from a refugee camp in Pakistan to the UK. The movie from 2002 shows the harsh reality of illegal immigration and the struggles migrants face when crossing borders and facing smugglers on their search for a promising future.

🎬“Fire at Sea”: This documentary by Gianfranco Rosi (2016) takes place on the Sicilian island Lampedusa. This is a place where many migrants come from North Africa on overcrowded boats. It focuses on the life of two local ordinary islanders, a young boy from a fisher family and a doctor who treats migrants. It shows the contrast of the worlds that collide on this island. The film highlights the immense amount of lives lost at sea and the challenges the witnesses of the tragedies face.

🎬„Europa“ (2021): The drama by Haider Rashid talks about an Iraqi man who enters through the Turkish-Bulgarian border. There he faces the border guards and flees in a forest, where he faces many challenges as rules and laws don’t exist.

Since Mid-2021, there has been an increasing number of migrants and asylum seekers at the border between Belarus and the EU seeking to enter through the border.
Due to EU sanctions and as political pressure, Belarus facilitates the irregular migration from mainly Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. They are promised a way to the EU.
Poland and the other EU countries do not provide access to the asylum legal procedure and push back the migrants to Belarus.

In addition the migrants face many violations of their human rights:
At the border: Groups of people usually camp out in the border area as they are denied entrance to the EU at official checkpoints. The migrants were left with limited access to drinking water and food and other essential living conditions.
After Pushback to Belarus: Also Belarusian authorities are reported to be violent and abusive towards the migrants at the border who got pushed back.

Even though the height of this migration flow was two years ago, repeated fluctuations of asylum seekers are still reported at the Polish and EU border in 2023.
