👩‍🎓 Young people are not officially recognised as a vulnerable group in the EU’s Just Transition framework or in energy poverty discussions. But the reality is clear: youth are disproportionately affected.

That’s why GCE is taking action. We:
📖 Published the Energy Poverty Among Young People report, highlighting how youth are disproportionately vulnerable to rising energy costs.
📣 Issued a Social Climate Fund statement, calling on EU Member States to provide targeted support for young people.
🗣️ Advocate for youth recognition as a vulnerable group in EU Just Transition and energy poverty policies to ensure they are not left behind.

✨ Our message is clear: a Just Transition must include youth, not treat them as invisible

🤝 Bridging generations for a just green transition!

🌱 This week we are co-organizing a study session with at their youth centre in Strasbourg.

🌍 Almost 30 young people are gathered for a 5-day intensive program, focusing on intergenerational fairness, intersectional gender equality and youth citizens engagement – all in the context of fighting climate change.

🚗 They face high mobility costs due to weak public transport

🚨 New statement out now: Shaping a Just Future: Prioritizing Youth in the Social Climate Fund and Energy Transition!

While the SCF is designed to cushion the impact of rising energy and transport prices under ETS 2, young people — among the most affected — are still not recognised as a vulnerable group.

📉 Most youth live in energy-inefficient rentals, face rising costs, and struggle to access public transport — and yet, they’re left out of national plans.

🗣️ We are calling for:

🔹 Recognition of youth as a vulnerable group
🔹 Youth-targeted financial support
🔹 Renovation aid for young renters
🔹 Youth participation in decision-making

This week we co-hosted the Intergenerational Dialogue with Commissioner Glenn Micallef and representatives from all generations!

We brought together:
👥 present generations
🕝 representatives of future generations
☘️ representatives of nature & non-human species

The results of the discussion will feed into the EU Intergenerational Fairness Strategy!

Thank you to the European Commission Joint Research Centre for this great collaboration! We need more spaces like this to promote intergenerational collaboration and dialogue.

📢 A Major Step for Sufficiency in Europe! 🌍♻️

Generation Climate Europe, alongside 96 European organisations from civil society, academia, local authorities, businesses, and public service operators—including Association négaWatt, Energy Cities, Jacques Delors Institute, ClientEarth, REScoop.eu, and ACR+ | Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management—has endorsed a manifesto for sufficiency in Europe. 📝📢🌿

This call for a resilient and resource-wise Europe was published ahead of the June 2024 European Parliament elections and European Council exchanges on the EU's strategic agenda for 2024-2029. 🇪🇺

✨ What’s in the manifesto? ✨

🔹 Calls on EU decision-makers to make sufficiency a central element of EU policies.
🔹 Urges the new European Commission to propose a Sufficiency Strategy—integrating it into the 2040 legislative framework and all relevant sectoral policies.
🔹 Aims to improve resilience, reduce costs, advance climate & energy goals, and enhance the quality of life for all Europeans. ♻️🫂

💡 Until now, sufficiency has not been part of European policymaking—despite growing calls from researchers, local authorities, and citizens. This is a bold, necessary call to address the multiple crises Europe is facing. ✊

🌍🚗🏠 ETS2: A Step Forward for Climate Action or a Burden on Consumers?

The EU is expanding carbon pricing to buildings and road transport with the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme 2 (ETS2).

🎯 This is a major step toward reducing emissions and meeting the EU’s climate targets. Under ETS2, fuel suppliers must report emissions, and an annual cap will drive reductions—aiming for a 42% cut by 2030.

⚠️ But what does this mean for people?

💰 Higher fuel and energy prices could disproportionately impact vulnerable communities, including youth. To prevent deepening inequalities, national governments must ensure that revenues from ETS2—like those allocated to the Social Climate Fund—effectively support those most affected.
