On 1-3 June 2026, AIM-SAFE project kicked off in Copenhagen!

Over three days of collaborative discussions, project partners worked together to shape immediate next steps in AIM-SAFE, funded by the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme aiming at developing AI-powered tools to improve medication safety and support more informed treatment decisions, including patients living with cancer and older patients aged 65+ with multimorbidity and taking more than four medications.

CPE’s role is to ensure that patient voices remain a core aspect of the project. Through co-design activities, stakeholder engagement, and training on trustworthy AI in healthcare.

At CPE we are committed to making healthcare safer, more informed, and more sustainable for patients across Europe.

On 1 June 2026 CPE Senior Policy Officer Joséphine Mosset-Keane participated in the debate “Health at a Crossroads: Active Aging, Prevention & Demographic Resilience” co-hosted by MEP Gabriela Firea (S&D, Romania) at the European Parliament.

Our CPE Senior Policy Officer highlighted an important challenge in cancer care: patients can only benefit from precision medicine if they have access to the diagnostic tests needed to identify the right treatment.

Drawing on the findings of CPE’s ESR1 White Paper, she shared how many patients with metastatic breast cancer still face barriers to accessing biomarker testing and liquid biopsy, despite the availability of new targeted treatments. Too often, where a patient lives determines whether they can access the tests and treatments that could improve their outcomes and quality of life.

CPE called for better access to both innovative treatments and the diagnostic tests that make those treatments possible, as well as greater patient awareness of biomarker testing and precision medicine.

Because innovation only matters if patients can access it.

We thank MEP Gabriela Firea and all participants for this important discussion on the future of healthcare in Europe.

Ni****ne addiction among young people is no longer a future risk - it is an urgent public health concern that demands action now.

Cancer Patients Europe is proud to co-author a joint open letter alongside European Network for Smoking and To***co and European and international health organisations, calling for stronger and more coherent EU action to protect youth from all forms of ni****ne addiction.

As new ni****ne products continue to evolve and target younger audiences, prevention, regulation, and youth protection must keep pace with today’s reality. Protecting the next generation starts with addressing ni****ne addiction at its source.

We are also grateful to CPE members who endorsed this important initiative and continue to stand with us in advocating for a tobacco-free generation.

On 8 May 2026, CPE hosted “The Price of Access: MFN Drug Pricing – What Could It Mean for Patient Access in Europe?” as part of our 2026 Webinar Series.

With US drug pricing policy increasingly affecting whether and when new cancer treatments reach European patients, CPE brought together policymakers, health economists, industry representatives, and patient advocates to unpack its real-world consequences.

Key takeaways from the discussion:
🔹 New cancer medicines can take 18 months or longer to reach patients in smaller countries after European approval;
🔹 Pricing decisions in one country ripple across borders through international reference pricing, widening inequalities in access to therapies;
🔹 Europe must urgently shift from reactive responses to coordinated, proactive strategies;
🔹 R&D investment moving away from Europe threatens both current access and future innovation.

At CPE, we remain committed to ensuring patient voices are central to every policy decision that shapes access to care.
