🇪🇺 On 14 October, CPE CEO Antonella Cardone opened the 1st Momentum conference: “Accelerating Europe’s Action on Cancer”, organised by the Swedish Cancer Society in Stockholm.

In her keynote speech, our CEO highlighted:

🔹 Turning commitments into action. Europe must adequately resource its cancer plans, monitor implementation and measure their impact on patients. The European Semester on health with a pilot in cancer would be a great solution.

🔹 Tackling inequalities in cancer care. Patients must have equitable access to screening, timely diagnosis and innovative treatments, wherever they live.

🔹 Putting patients at the heart of decisions. Patient involvement must be embedded from the outset of research questions, health policy and decision making.

On 15 October our CEO also joined the panel discussion "Patients as partners", reinforcing the importance of placing patients’ and lived experience at the heart of research, policy and cancer care.

CPE believes that Europe has the knowledge and commitments to make a difference. The priority now is to accelerate implementation and ensure that progress reaches every patient, wherever they live.

🎓 Connecting patient experiences, research and better cancer care

On 13 October, CPE welcomed MSc students from Wageningen University’s Nutrition & Health programme to our office in Brussels for an exchange on the role of patient organisations in shaping cancer research, care and policy across Europe.

The CPE team, our Chair, Francisco Rodríguez Lozano, and CPE members Martin Sweeney and Goranka Perc shared their activities and perspectives on patient advocacy and the importance of integrating lived experience into research and cancer care.

The visit highlighted how collaboration between researchers and patients can help make research more relevant to patients’ needs and contribute to more patient-centred cancer care.

Today marks the first-ever !

Access to reliable, understandable cancer information is essential to empowering patients and citizens to make informed decisions about prevention and care. Yet inequalities in cancer literacy continue to create barriers across Europe.

The project is helping address these challenges by developing accessible educational resources, a Health Literacy Hub and innovative training programmes to strengthen cancer knowledge among citizens, patients, carers and healthcare professionals.

Today, we join European initiatives in raising awareness of the importance of cancer literacy and supporting more equitable access to cancer knowledge for everyone.

🎀 You may have heard of breast cancer. But have you heard of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)?

TNBC is a type of breast cancer that does not have any of the three markers that doctors can use to guide some common breast cancer treatments:
🔹 Oestrogen receptors
🔹 Progesterone receptors
🔹 HER2

Because TNBC lacks these three markers, some treatments commonly used for other breast cancer subtypes may not be effective.

For people living with TNBC, this can mean fewer treatment options and more uncertainty.

🔬 That’s why research is so important. SURPASS-TNBC is working to better understand why some treatments work for some people but not for others, and to find new ways to make treatment more personalised.

Wednesday will mark the first-ever !

On 14 October, the project will join organisations and EU-funded projects from across Europe at the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss the importance of accessible, reliable cancer information in reducing inequalities in cancer prevention and care.

The event will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, share best practices and strengthen collaboration among European initiatives working to improve cancer literacy, including 4P-CAN, CAREWAY, BClear, CLEAR-PC and CHOICE.

📣 Have you or someone close to you been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer?

CPE is conducting a short survey to better understand patients’, families’ and carers’ experiences of tests, scans and new treatments for metastatic prostate cancer.

The survey explores awareness of biomarkers and genetic testing, specialised scans and treatments, access to care, and the information patients receive.

🎀 What if the same treatment doesn’t work for everyone?

For someone diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), finding the right treatment can be particularly challenging.

With current treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, some patients do not respond as hoped. But what if we could better understand who is likely to benefit from a treatment, and who may need something different?

This is what SURPASS-TNBC is working towards. The project is looking for biomarkers that could help predict how a patient is likely to respond to treatment, while also exploring new targets for people whose cancer does not respond to current therapies.

🇪u Putting patients at the heart of Europe’s health data transformation

On 1 October, Francisco Rodríguez, CPE President, participated in the panel “Europa y datos: proyectos que ya están cambiando el sistema” at the Congreso de Organizaciones de Pacientes in Bilbao, organised by the Plataforma de Organizaciones de Pacientes (POP).

The discussion explored how European initiatives and health data projects are contributing to changes in healthcare systems, and why patients’ perspectives must remain central to these developments.

For people living with cancer, meaningful patient involvement is essential to ensure that health data, digital innovation and European collaboration respond to patients’ real needs and help improve care.

By creating spaces for dialogue, sharing knowledge and building synergies between patient organisations, the Congress highlighted the importance of working together towards more patient-centred healthcare.

🩸 From recognition to action for more equitable blood cancer care in Europe.

On 30 September, during Blood Cancer Awareness Month, Josephine Mosset, CPE Head of Policy, took part in ECLLA’s High-Level Policy Dialogue at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The event brought together policymakers, patient advocates, clinicians, researchers and cancer organisations to launch ECLLA’s European Policy Brief 2026 and discuss how European and national action can address inequalities in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) care.

At CPE, we believe that people affected by cancer must be meaningfully involved in shaping policies and care pathways to ensure that progress translates into better and more equitable outcomes across Europe.
