On Sunday, June 14, Brussels-North we’re joining the march against militarisation!

The EU is on a dangerous path of militarising our economy, communities and borders. This includes plans to spend an extra €800 billion on arms that will be stolen from social services, health, education, labour, peace building, international cooperation, a just transition and climate justice.

Instead, it will go to arms companies. This militarisation process disproportionately affects racialised communities. From more militarised police, to surviellance and drone technology being used at the border to arms being tested and sold to countries in the global south affected by war.

That’s why we’re call on all those who choose demilitarisation and justice to join our racial justice bloc!

This initiative is led by the platforms .be and , with the support of the trade unions and .

We stand in solidarity with Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila, who are being illegally held by Israel after being abducted three days ago in international waters off the coast of Greece – over 1,000 km from Gaza. Saif and Thiago were two of 175 activists on the Global Sumud Flotilla seeking to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, which Israel has prevented from entering. Other activists report being beaten punched, kicked and shot at with real and rubber bullets on board an Israeli warship before being released.

This abduction did not happen in a vacuum. European governments continue to grant economic, political and military support to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. In this case, there are reports the Greek security and border patrol worked with the IDF to intercept the Flotilla.

No more EU complicity!

The EU must suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement immediately and negotiate the freedom of Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila.

A few hours after the announcement of a ceasefire between the US and Iran, Israel droppped hundreds of bombs on Lebanon in 10 minutes, killing over 250 people. This comes after over 10,000 Israeli violations of the November 2024 ceasefire, and over 3,500 strikes on Lebanon in the first month of the US-Israeli aggression against Iran. In her statement today, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas blamed Lebanon for being attacked and invoked Israel’s right to self-defense before finally speaking up, stating that Israel’s attacks “go beyond self-defense.”

But for the past month we’ve watched the US and Israel bomb Iran and Lebanon, from hospitals, schools to neighbourhoods, whilst the past three years we’ve seen Israel genocide Gaza.

Europe’s collective inaction gives the US & Israel impunity to kill, destroy and invade. The EU could take a powerful stand - like Spain cutting the US off from using it’s airbases - but it continues to drag it’s feet.

It’s time for action:
🇱🇧 Hands off Lebanon.
🛑 End the EU-Israel Agreement.

Deportation Regulation Vote - 9 March - PASSED in LIBE with far-right coalition

Our first takeaways:

This vote shows us that now the far-right openly controls migration policy, but centrists enabled this shift.

Azmani’s text on deportations did not significantly differ from the far right version. The centrist version of the text included lengthy detention, it allowed for blanket deportation orders, and harsh, punitive sanctions for people perceived not to ‘comply’ with their deportation order. It did not even remove ‘return hubs’ - the offshore detention prisons outside of the EU.

This is disposability - or as Murielle Laurent MEP called ‘a new era of trade in persons’ - exiling people without regard to where they are from or their personal circumstances.

What it means and what’s next?
Yesterday’s vote sets the path for an EU mass deportation policy - ramping up raids on families, prisons, policing and surveillance without regard for human rights standards or safeguards.

There may be another challenge in the European Parliament announced in coming days. Following this, the legislation will advance to ‘trilogues’ where the European Commission, Parliament and Council further negotiate this law.

From deportation systems optimised through surveillance, to the criminalisation of migrants framed as a permanent ‘security threat’, the EU’s migration agenda bears the hallmarks of fascist politics.

Today, normalising cruelty in the treatment of the ‘foreigner’ is a project of Europe’s political establishment, in close partnership with powerful private interests that profit from bordering and repression.

👉But beyond the banal and the brutal, there is also resistance and refusal.

Read the article written by our team member Alyna Smith, which unpacks technocratic fascism, the political economy of border control, and how “efficiency” becomes a tool for normalising deportations and everyday state violence.

🚨Yesterday, the European Parliament approved new rules on “Safe Countries of Origin” and “Safe Third Countries” and they’re now set to become law.

The changes expand the list of countries considered “safe” and could allow authorities to deport people to third countries they’ve never even been to.

This changes politicise the idea of “safety,” increase risks of family separation, and weaken access to proper legal review!

Our director .chander adds on:

“The adoption of the hardened Safe Third Country regime was only possible today thanks to an alliance with the far-right in the European Parliament.
More people will be unfairly deported to countries they have never been to, because the EU has allowed itself to be steered on migration by fear-mongering extremists.
EU politicians are abdicating their responsibility under international and EU law and taking further steps towards the construction of a mass EU deportation machine.”
