🇺🇦 ESFUF at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 🇺🇦

Two years after its launch, the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films (ESFUF) returned to the for a key event highlighting its achievements and renewed commitment to supporting Ukrainian cinema.

Ukrainian Minister of Culture, Mr. Mykola Tochytskyi, opened the event with a speech on cultural diplomacy. This was followed by statements from Members of the European Parliament underlining the importance of European support for Ukrainian filmmakers.

The ESFUF team presented a report on the fund’s impact over the past two years and announced the results of its latest production support call. Eight new projects, including documentaries, fiction films, and animation projects, received funding, half of which were directed or co-directed by women.

The supported projects are:

🔹 Screaming Girl by Antonio Lukich
🔹 The Elf’s Tower by Polina Kelm

The event concluded with the announcement of ESFUF’s renewal for 2025, marking its third consecutive year of solidarity-driven support for Ukrainian cinema.

New Dawn is back with its latest funding call, reinforcing its commitment to a more inclusive, diverse, and vibrant film industry. This international production fund—an initiative by public film funds, including the Nederlands Filmfonds, Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel, ICA - O Nosso Ecrã, Film Fund Luxembourg, and Telefilm Canada—aims to support emerging voices and original storytelling that reflect the many perspectives of our ever-evolving society.

💡 Who can apply?
🔹 Independent production companies based in one of the participating countries
🔹 First or second feature-length fiction, documentary, or animated films
🔹 Projects with artistic quality and selective production support from a participating fund
🔹 Maximum budgets: €3.5M for fiction, €800K for documentaries (no cap for animation)
🔹 At least 50% of financing must be in place at the time of application

𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲-𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲́𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝗙𝗔𝗗 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹

After an extraordinary tenure at the European Film Agency Directors Association (EFAD), Julie-Jeanne Régnault will step down as Secretary General in March 2025.

During her time leading EFAD, the organization experienced remarkable growth and transformation, solidifying its position as a leading voice in the European audiovisual sector.

EFAD expanded from 16 to 38 members and has been instrumental in navigating critical European Union policy discussions, including on the Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS) Directive, State aid, Creative Europe – MEDIA, SatCab, EMFA, and geoblocking.
The association has also been actively involved in significant legal cases, ranging from the cross-border access to pay-TV dispute to recent complaints filed by major online platforms against the Belgian government. Last but not least, it has initiated amazing cooperation and solidarity projects such as DALE!, ESFUF and NEW DAWN.

Last week, EFAD proudly participated in two remarkable screenings in Brussels. Each event highlighted European filmmaking's diversity, creativity, and collaborative spirit.

✨ On December 10, in collaboration with the European Coalitions for Cultural Diversity (ECCD) and other prominent European cultural and audiovisual associations, we hosted the exclusive screening of the Hungarian feature Semmelweis, directed by Lajos Koltai, at Cinema Palace. This historical biopic is Hungary’s official Oscars entry.

✨ On December 11, the Permanent Representation of Latvia to the EU and Take Five, in partnership with EFAD, ARTE, and the LUX Audience Award, presented the breathtaking animated film Flow by Gints Zilbalodis at Cinema Galeries. This stunning Latvian co-production won Best European Animated Film at the 37th European Film Awards and is nominated for the 2025 LUX Audience Award.

Both events reinforced how European cinema connects us across borders, stories, and perspectives.
