De Antwerpse tak van YWCA is een wat vreemde eend in de katholieke bijt: als een van de weinige wereldwijde YWCA’s heeft ze de christelijke 'C’ laten vallen. ‘Onze werking is pluralistisch’, zegt Inez, ‘we staan open voor mensen van alle origines en religies. Deze wisselwerking maakt ook onze rijkdom.

Eerste Belgische jeugdhuis:
YWCA in Antwerpen kent een hele evolutie. Tij

dens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het huis in de Paleisstraat opgevorderd door de Duitsers, alle activiteiten werden verboden. Toch bleven de leden clandestien samenkomen. Toen de economie begon op te leven, richtte de organisatie in 1952 het eerste Belgische jeugdhuis op. In 1960 bepaalde de danswet dat minderjarige meisjes geen danszalen binnen mochten zonder voogd. Jeugdhuizen vormden daarop een uitzondering. Zo werd het YWCA razend populair: hier kon de jeugd wél terecht om te dansen en elkaar te ontmoeten.

Nieuwkomers welkom:
‘Toen vanaf de jaren 60 de eerste immigratiegolven naar België op gang kwamen, richtte YWCA-Antwerpen zich als een van de eerste organisaties op de nieuwkomers. We organiseerden veel activiteiten voor Congolese studenten en Noord-Afrikaanse 'gastarbeiders', zoals ze toen werden genoemd. Vooral migrantenjongeren vonden snel hun weg naar ons. Allereerst voor de douches in de kelder, een luxe die veel jongeren thuis niet hadden. Maar vooral om vrienden te ontmoeten, samen te voetballen of op kamp te gaan naar de Ardennen.’

Ontmoeting tussen vrouwen:
Vandaag biedt YWCA een brede waaier aan culturele, educatieve en ook gewoon gezellige activiteiten aan, toegankelijk voor iedereen. Centraal staat de ontmoeting tussen vrouwen. Zo krijgen vrouwen, ongeacht hun achtergrond, kansen om hun talenten te (her)ontdekken, om kennis en vaardigheden op te doen. We zien hier heel mooie vriendschappen ontstaan. Tijdens de ontmoetingen en in de opleidingen die we aanbieden. Door vrouwen bewust te maken van hun mogelijkheden en hen te stimuleren, maken we hen sterker en bevorderen we hun maatschappelijke integratie. Jaarlijks ondersteunen we wel zo’n 400 vrouwen.

On Sunday the 12th of July at 10:00 Lucy’s is organising a small English-language book swap! 💙 One book can be enjoyed by many, so bring the ones you’ve already read and want to share with others!

How does it work? You bring 1-5 English-language books that you’ve already read, and you can take 1-5 books with you that sound interesting! 🥳 The more people that show up, the more diversity in books, so bring a friend!

Our coffee bar will be open that Sunday from 10:00-13:00 for crochet brunch, so once you have your new books, you’re welcome to have a coffee and read for a while! 🫶🏼

On Saturday was the finissage of our week long exhibition ‘Tussen Oost en West’, the art of Su-Yin Wang.

Thank you to everyone who came to support the art of Su-Yin and to everyone who took part in the silent auction. We managed to raise €1,600 in support of Lucy’s and Alzheimer Liga!

Thank you to Patricia for letting us host such a special and heartwarming exhibition in our space 💙

Lucy’s Thrift Shop is now open! A corner of Lucy’s Kafè dedicated to cute second hand clothes at small prices 💙

You can come and shop during the opening hours of the Kafè: weekdays from 10am-4pm. By buying clothes here you’re not only giving clothes a second life but you’re also supporting our women’s centre which allows us to continue offering free activities for women in the community ☀️

If you have any clothes you would like to donate, we would be happy to receive them! We ask for clean clothes with no holes or tears. You can drop them off with the volunteer baristas in our Kafè 🫶🏼 (no children’s clothes, shoes or accessories)

‘Tussen Oost en West’ exhibition is open from today onwards! You can visit the expo from 10am-4pm every day. There are 75 pieces available for purchase through a silent auction. You can bid on these pieces until Friday the 12th at 1pm. The proceeds of the auction go towards Lucy’s women’s centre and Alzheimer Liga.

On Saturday the 13th of June, we will end the expo with a big finissage event from 10am-7pm! Everyone is welcome! You can see the programme on our previous post.

A closer look at everything that will be happening at our Zomerfeest on the 27th!

Throughout the whole day we will have 25 local makers selling their beautiful creations in our big hall 💙 Keep an eye out for our Meet the Makers post coming next week where you can have a closer look at who’s coming! We also have four workshops and a yoga class from Lucy’s Studio you can join, register via the link in our bio.

Local band Tanika en de Horizon () will be performing in the big hall at 16:45! And there will be a clothing swap and tarot readings during the day as well!

And of course, delicious coffee, cakes and fresh drinks from our Kafè all day, and from 16:00 a BBQ in the garden with veggie hot dogs!

It’s going to be a very fun day, we hope to see you there ☀️

Lucy’s is hosting a Zomerfeest on the 27th of June! There will be a big makers market, workshops, yoga, tarot readings, performances and a BBQ 💙

25 local makers will be selling their art from ceramics to crochet and there will be four workshops throughout the day for everyone to take part in! Lucy’s Kafè will also be open and selling coffee and (vegan) treats, and we’ll have a small veggie BBQ in our garden starting at 16:00.

Our June classes at Lucy’s Studio, our movement programme designed by women for women. Accessible classes in a comfortable, women-only space 💙

We believe wellness and movement should be accessible to all so we now also offer a reduced price for students, you can send us a DM to receive the coupon code for our website and make sure to bring a valid student card with you to the class.

We also have an ‘Equal Chances’ price, for if the regular price is out of your budget at the moment but you would still like to be able to join our classes. To apply for this discount, we only ask for you to fill in a short application form which you can find on our site. We kindly ask only those who truly need this option to apply, so we can continue keeping the classes accessible for everyone.

Onze lessen in juni bij Lucy’s Studio, ons bewegingsprogramma dat door vrouwen voor vrouwen is ontworpen. Toegankelijke lessen in een comfortabele ruimte die exclusief voor vrouwen is bestemd 💙

Wij vinden dat welzijn en beweging voor iedereen toegankelijk moeten zijn. Daarom bieden we nu ook een kortingstarief voor studenten aan. Stuur ons een DM om de kortingscode voor onze website te ontvangen en vergeet niet een geldige studentenkaart mee te nemen naar de les.

We hebben ook een ‘Equal Chances’-tarief, voor als de reguliere prijs op dit moment buiten je budget valt, maar je toch graag aan onze lessen wilt deelnemen. Om deze korting aan te vragen, vragen we je alleen een kort aanvraagformulier in te vullen dat je op onze site kunt vinden.
