Today, we celebrate the Catalan holiday!
On 11 September 1714, the siege of Barcelona came to an end. Thirteenth months of fierce battle concluded not only the War of Spanish Succession, but also marked the end of the autonomous Principality of Catalonia (and the transformation of the Spanish Low Countries to the Austrian Low Countries). Today, the siege is commemorated yearly in Catalonia as the Diada Nacional de Catalunya or La Diada. It has been the official Catalan holiday since 1980 and, starting from the 2010s, has acted as a major platform for the demand of more autonomy and independence.
The archive of one of the key organizers of events during La Diada, Assamblea, has recently been transferred to the ADVN | archive for national movements, and poses an intriguing case for further comparative analysis with other intermediary structures across Europe (including the Vlaamse Volksbeweging).
