🗣️ Last Saturday was International Mother Language Day. 🗣️

Language as a key component of both an individual and collective identity has since time immemorial formed a central tenet in nationalism studies. The research in particular on ‘Romantic Nationalism’ has shown how since the late 18th and early 19th century, linguistics, as Czech scholar Miroslav Hroch argued, were essential in developing a distinct national identity. National identity, put simply, can not exist without language.

🚨 Introducing our latest NISE project: Natan! 🚨

With the World Cup approaching, colleagues Kas and Nick decided to take a closer look at all the national anthems of the participating countries. That is why they are launching the “National Anthems” (Natan) project. The aim is to create an accessible overview, highlighting links and recurring themes.

They are currently busy adding this information to the digital DIANE database and building a new platform on the NISE website, where the findings will soon be available for consultation.

Quite the evening! 🥔

Last Wednesday, Prof. Dr. Maarten Van Ginderachter (University of Antwerp, Centre for Political History - PoHis - University of Antwerp) presented his new book, ‘Arm Vlaanderen: een wereldgeschiedenis,’ [Poor Flanders: A World History] for a packed Nottenbohmzaal. Guiding the audience on a trip through 19th-century Flanders from a global perspective, he illustrated how the social and economic crises that plagued Flanders in the mid-19th century were neither archaic nor local.

Afterwards, there was an opportunity to have a copy signed and enjoy a nice glass of wine at our reception. In other words, it was a successful evening, and we are already looking forward to next year's NISE lecture!

🚨 The yearly NISE-Lecture is here! 🚨

Our yearly free lecture will take place on November 19, in the beautiful Nottenbohm room. Here, Prof. Dr. Maarten Van Ginderachter of the History Department at the University of Antwerp (UAntwerpen) will present his latest publication: ‘Arm Vlaanderen. Een wereldgeschiedenis – Honger, ziekte en globalisering in het midden van de 19de eeuw’, a tale of hunger in 19th-century Flanders from a global perspective. If this fascinating lecture about the state of potatoes doesn't make you hungry, perhaps the reception that follows, will.

Today is the European Day of Languages!

With its roots set in the Romantic tradition, all across Europe - ranging from Flanders to Catalonia, from Poland to Slovenia & the Czech Republic and many more - the development of national movements and identities was intrinsically linked to languages, their codification and protection. Even today, organizations such as the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) still strive to protect and promote the wide tapestry of linguistic diversity that has marked European history since time immemorial. So do not hesitate to open Duolingo or a language course book today and start experiencing and learning about the rich linguistic diversity!

Today, we celebrate the Catalan holiday!

On 11 September 1714, the siege of Barcelona came to an end. Thirteenth months of fierce battle concluded not only the War of Spanish Succession, but also marked the end of the autonomous Principality of Catalonia (and the transformation of the Spanish Low Countries to the Austrian Low Countries). Today, the siege is commemorated yearly in Catalonia as the Diada Nacional de Catalunya or La Diada. It has been the official Catalan holiday since 1980 and, starting from the 2010s, has acted as a major platform for the demand of more autonomy and independence.

The archive of one of the key organizers of events during La Diada, Assamblea, has recently been transferred to the ADVN | archive for national movements, and poses an intriguing case for further comparative analysis with other intermediary structures across Europe (including the Vlaamse Volksbeweging).
