Maiya School was founded to provide teenage girls affected by displacement around the world the opportunity to attain an education, improving their own life, and the lives of those around them 👭🏽👭🏽👭🏿👭🏻

We are motivated to increase opportunities, raise self-confidence, and inspire a generation of girls living in refugee camps where female education is largely inaccessible 🌏 📗

After four years of providing life-changing education to Rohingya girls in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, the Board of Maiya School has made the difficult decision to close the school at the end of the 2026 school year.

Maiya School was one of the few schools in the Cox’s Bazar camp to remain open in recent months. However due to a shortage of funds, it can no longer continue to operate. The last day for students was 30 June - which is the final day of the 2026 school year.

“If we could continue to operate Maiya School on love and enthusiasm alone, then we would be welcoming students into our classrooms for years to come,” said founders Pip Nilsson and Dayna Santana. “However our financial situation means that is just not possible.”

“We are extremely proud of the very real change we have generated for our students and the host community in Cox’s Bazar, and whilst we will close at the end of the 2026 school year, we have laid strong foundations should other organisations be financially positioned to return students to our classrooms in the future.”

Listening, learning, and moving forward together đź’›

We recently wrapped up a two-day parent–teacher meeting, something we hadn’t been able to hold in quite some time, and the response was incredibly encouraging.

Almost all families from both shifts attended, with parents actively participating, asking questions, and sharing thoughtful feedback.

During the meetings, teachers discussed key topics including the importance of girls’ education, the negative impacts of early marriage, maintaining hygiene during the winter months, and discipline and time management. Teachers also shared updates on the girls’ progress in the classroom, reinforcing the value of continued education within the community.
