When discussing climate change, people often focus only on carbon dioxide (CO₂), but methane (CH₄) is actually far more dangerous in the short term. Methane traps much more heat in the atmosphere than CO₂ — around 25 times more over 100 years, and even higher over 20 years. That’s why controlling methane is one of the fastest ways to slow global warming.
Biogas and proper waste management play a major role in reducing methane emissions.
When animal manure, food waste, or organic waste is left in open fields, drains, lagoons, or landfills, it naturally decomposes and releases methane directly into the atmosphere. This uncontrolled methane becomes a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Biogas systems solve this problem by capturing the methane before it escapes. Inside a biodigester, organic waste is processed in an oxygen-free environment, and the methane is collected as biogas instead of polluting the atmosphere. The gas is then used as clean renewable energy for cooking, electricity, or heating.
This creates multiple environmental benefits:
Reduces methane emissions from livestock and waste
Replaces firewood, coal, and LPG with renewable energy
Reduces deforestation and indoor air pollution
Produces organic biofertilizer, reducing chemical fertilizer use
Improves sanitation and community waste management

For rural communities, biogas is not only an energy solution — it is also a climate solution, a waste management solution, and a public health solution.
Without large-scale biogas and organic waste management, achieving global renewable energy and climate goals will be extremely difficult, especially in agricultural countries like Bangladesh where livestock and organic waste are widely available.
