Transforming the futures of child workers through education and empowerment

The UK-Bangladesh Education Trust (UKBET) is a UK registered charity (no. 1027704) and a registered international NGO in Bangladesh. We train school teachers of English, run innovative education programmes for child workers and campaign for an end to child labour. Despite being against the law in Bangladesh the employment of children under-14 is still rife. Extreme poverty forces families to send their children as young as six into work where 3.2m children are exploited, face abuse and are at risk of harm in return for very little pay. UKBET persuades employers to release working children for short, regular learning periods with specialist community teachers. Basic numeracy, literacy and essential life skills give them a foundation in education and, alongside working with their families, the aim is to support them out of work and into school or vocational training and brighter future opportunities.

Exploring new ways to make learning more accessible. 💛

UKBET is piloting AI-assisted self-learning through Zaaka AI Tutor, a project of SkillForge Global, with 10 former Doorstep Learning Programme (DLP) students participating in the initiative. As the implementation partner, UKBET is working with SkillForge Global to explore how AI can help children take greater ownership of their learning.

Today, SkillForge Global’s founder, Jay Miah, visited the UKBET office to meet the team and students involved in the pilot. Through this initiative, we aim to explore how AI-assisted self-learning can support children’s independent learning and contribute to more inclusive educational opportunities.

A child should be holding a book, chasing dreams and enjoying her childhood—not sacrificing it to domestic child labour. Let’s not normalise this. Through the Doorstep Learning Programme, we are working to bring education to children like Tamanna and help them reclaim the futures they deserve.

UKBET at a BRAC Roundtable in Sylhet

On 9 February 2026, the UK Bangladesh Education Trust (UKBET) was represented at a BRAC roundtable discussion in Sylhet, attended by UK Members of Parliament Apsana Begum and Shockat Adam, Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury, Administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, and Md Abdullah Al Mamun, Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, alongside members of the press and other changemakers from across society.

Representing UKBET, Tuhfa Hussain Nova, Communications Officer, shared insights from the Doorstep Learning Programme (DLP), highlighting our work supporting children engaged in domestic child labour and discussing women’s empowerment and barriers to livelihood choices.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share our work and exchange ideas towards more inclusive opportunities for children and families.

Standing with teachers, shaping our future.

On 7 October 2026, UKBET, in collaboration with CAMPE, organised a discussion in Sylhet to mark World Teachers’ Day, focusing on teachers’ dignity, professional rights, safety and quality education.

Chaired by educationist Professor Dr Tahmina Islam, the discussion highlighted the importance of recognising teachers’ contributions, protecting their rights and ensuring a supportive working environment.

Supporting teachers means strengthening education and building a better future for all.

A rickshaw for her father. A brighter future for Shimu. 💛

Through the Family Futures microgrant, Shimu’s father received a rickshaw to earn a stable income, so the family no longer has to depend on her earnings from domestic child labour. Now, Shimu can focus on her education and her dreams.

A rickshaw can help keep a child in school. 💛

Through the Family Futures microgrant, Shimla’s father received a rickshaw to build a more stable source of income for the family, so the family no longer has to depend on Shimla’s income from domestic child labour. This support gives Shimla the opportunity to focus on her education and build a brighter future.
