PRADHIKAR a non-political, non-biased organization of the general students of Sylhet Agricultural University . It’s a Volunteer team that works for the establishment and reservation of animal rights to welfare and conservation of biodiversity. Animal welfare refers
“According to the OIE Terrestrial Code, “animal welfare means how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it liv
es”. The OIE guiding principles on animal welfare also mention the universally recognised “Five Freedoms”, published in 1965 to describe the right to welfare of animals under human control. The Five Freedoms are:
-------Freedom from thirst and hunger – by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
--------Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
--------Freedom from pain, injury, and disease – by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
--------Freedom to express most normal behavior – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal's own kind
---------Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.”
Conservation of Biodiversity refers
“Protection of biodiversity is therefore crucial both for animals and humans, in particular at a time when global challenges are posed by growing human population; increasing movement of goods, animals and people, together with pathogens and invasive species; and climate changes, to name a few. With a mandate to improve animal health, veterinary public health and animal welfare world-wide, the PRADHIKAR, along with other international and national organizations, has a key role to play to protect biodiversity. Protection of biodiversity is also one of the platforms where intersectoral collaboration between animal and human health and environmental health needs to be developed and reinforced under the “One Health” initiatives.”
