Look at the Bangladesh flag carefully. The red circle appears to be perfectly centred. But it is not.

The red disc on Bangladesh's flag is slightly shifted toward the hoist — the left side — so that it appears visually centred when the flag is flying in the wind.

A Bengali poet loved the Nakshi Kantha so much he wrote an entire poem about it. 📖

In 1929 the poet Jasimuddin published a long narrative poem called Nakshi Kanthar Math — The Field of the Embroidered Quilt.

It tells the story of a young woman named Saaju who embroiders her love story into a Nakshi Kantha — stitching the scenes of her life with her husband into the fabric with such care and such feeling that the quilt becomes a record of everything she has loved and lost.

The poem became one of the most celebrated works in Bengali literature — translated into many languages, studied in schools across Bangladesh and West Bengal, read by generations of people who recognised something true in its story.

Because the Nakshi Kantha is not just a craft. It is a form of literature — written in thread instead of ink, in pattern instead of words, by women who had no other way to tell their stories.

The people in your family who speak Bengali most beautifully are getting older. 💚

This is the one that sits quietly in the back of your mind.

Your dadi. Your nana. The aunties who have been speaking Bengali their whole lives and who know every proverb, every folk song, every phrase that has no translation in English.

They are getting older. And with them — a version of this language that exists nowhere else. Not in any textbook. Not in any app. Only in them.

Every learner we have ever taught has said the same thing to us at some point.

I wish I had started sooner.

The oldest folk art tradition in Bangladesh tells its stories in pictures — and in Bengali. 🎨

Patachitra means picture on cloth — and it is one of the oldest folk art traditions in South Asia.

Travelling artists called Patuas would carry long scrolls painted with scenes from religious stories — the lives of the prophets, folk legends, social commentary — and walk from village to village singing the stories illustrated on the scrolls in Bengali.

The painting and the singing were inseparable. You could not understand one without the other. The images told the story visually. The Bengali song explained the meaning, provided the details, named the characters and gave the story its emotional weight.

Patachitra is still practised in Bangladesh today — both as a living folk tradition and as a celebrated art form. UNESCO has recognised its cultural significance. 🎨

On the night of 25th March 1971 — everything changed. 🇧🇩

Most people outside Bangladesh have never heard of Operation Searchlight.

But every Bangladeshi person knows the date. 25th March 1971.

That was the night the Pakistani military launched a brutal crackdown on the people of East Pakistan — targeting students, intellectuals, activists and ordinary civilians in Dhaka and across the country. Tanks rolled into university dormitories. Artillery fired on civilian neighbourhoods.

People who had done nothing more than speak Bengali and demand their democratic rights were killed in their homes.

The next morning — 26th March 1971 — Bangladesh declared independence.
And for the next nine months — the Mukti Bahini, the freedom fighters of Bangladesh, fought one of the most determined liberation struggles in modern history.

They fought in Bengali. They prayed in Bengali. They sang freedom songs in Bengali. And on 16th December 1971 — they won.




He wrote songs about love, rebellion and God. All in Bengali. And Bangladesh never forgot them. 🎵His name was Kazi Nazru...

He wrote songs about love, rebellion and God. All in Bengali. And Bangladesh never forgot them. 🎵

His name was Kazi Nazrul Islam — the Rebel Poet of Bengal.

He wrote over 3,000 songs in Bengali — a body of work so vast and so varied that they are classified as their own genre. Nazrul Geeti. Songs of Nazrul.

Some are devotional — deeply spiritual Islamic songs called hamd and na'at that are still sung in mosques and homes across Bangladesh. Some are revolutionary — fierce, passionate songs against colonial oppression and social injustice. Some are love songs so tender they have never been surpassed in Bengali literature.

Nazrul Geeti is still sung at every major cultural event in Bangladesh. Still taught in schools. Still hummed by people in the streets who may not even know who wrote the song they are singing.

Because the best music becomes part of the air. And Nazrul's music is part of the Bengali air. 🎵

You learned Bengali in the kitchen. Without even realising it.

Nobody gave you a textbook.

Nobody sat you down and said — today we are going to learn Bengali. Nobody tested you. Nobody graded you.

But you learned it anyway.

You learned it standing in the kitchen watching your mum cook and listening to her talk to your khala for an hour in Bengali. You learned it at family gatherings when the adults spoke in a language that felt like home even when you did not understand every word. You learned it from the way your nana said your name — with that particular softness that only exists in Bengali.

You absorbed it without trying. And then life happened. And English took over. And the Bengali stayed somewhere inside you — warm and familiar but unspoken.

It is still there. It never left.

Come and find it again — properly this time💙
