The Story of The PHPC Project (2018-2026)

Bangladesh’s First Public Health Photo Contest Project Presented at Emory University

The Public Health Photo Contest (PHPC) Project was presented on February 24, 2026, at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, USA, as part of the Practicum Course for the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship -- Humphrey Fellows Seminar (Rollins School of Public Health).

Dr. Md Zohirul Alam, Convener of the Project, shared the story and evolution of Bangladesh’s first-ever public health–focused photography initiative. Established in 2018, the project harnesses visual storytelling to raise awareness of critical public health challenges and to foster evidence-informed dialogue across communities.

The program opened with remarks by Professor Roger Rochat, MD, Emeritus Professor at Emory University, and concluded with closing remarks by Senator Sheikh Rahman of Georgia Senate District 5. Senator Rahman highlighted the importance of innovative public health communication in strengthening community awareness and policy engagement.

The Director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program (Emory University), Usha Ramakrishnan, Ph.D., Chair and Distinguished Richard N. Hubert Professor of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health, was also in attendance.

During the interactive Q&A session, S.L. Bachman, representing the PHPC Global Advisory Board, and Dr. Alam addressed questions about the role of photography in exploring how it can humanize health data and people’s perspectives, support public health education, and ultimately raise health awareness. Participants engaged in a thoughtful discussion on how visual narratives can elevate community voices and inspire meaningful health action.

The event brought together Emory faculty members, Humphrey Fellows from ten countries, students, and invited guests.

The PHPC Project continues to demonstrate how photography can serve as a powerful medium of communication for public health advocacy, education, and collective action.

Dr. Alam expressed gratitude to the many volunteers, collaborators, and supporters worldwide whose support, guidance, encouragement, and generous contributions have sustained the PHPC Project since its inception.

We are pleased to share that our two photobooks—

1. Public Health: Through the Lens (2018)
2. Public Health: Through the Lens 2 (2023)
have been officially cataloged at the Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library.

Having these volumes preserved at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—the world’s premier public health institute—is both an honor and a reminder of the role photography can play in advancing awareness, advocacy, and dialogue in global public health.

For books born from a grassroots photo contest in Bangladesh, hosted by Gonoshasthaya Kendra, one of the oldest NGO, to now be part of the CDC’s official library holdings is a recognition of our collective work. These volumes will serve as a reference for public health professionals, researchers, practitioners, and students seeking insight into the heart of the world’s leading public health agency.
