Although the floodwaters have begun to recede in Farua Union, Bilaichari Upazila of Rangamati District, they have left behind widespread devastation. As the water withdraws, the true extent of the damage is becoming clear. Nearly 170 families across 15 villages have suffered severe losses, with homes and agricultural land badly affected.

While the floodwaters are decreasing, the suffering is far from over. Instead, a new crisis has emerged. Most of the area's water sources and tube wells have been contaminated, leading to a severe shortage of safe drinking water. People are struggling to access clean water, and without urgent intervention, there is a serious risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseases. The affected communities now urgently need humanitarian assistance to recover and rebuild their lives.

At this critical time, the Farua Student Welfare Association has stepped forward to support the flood-affected families facing this water crisis. The organization is raising funds to provide emergency drinking water, essential medicines, and rehabilitation supplies to those in need.

Let us all come together and contribute whatever we can to this humanitarian effort. Even a small donation can help ease the suffering of these vulnerable families.

Kaptai Lake is one of the largest sources of freshwater in Bangladesh. This lake is deeply connected not only to Rangamati but also to the lives, livelihoods, economy, and biodiversity of the entire hill region. Therefore, keeping Kaptai Lake clean and pollution-free is the responsibility of all of us.

With this goal in mind, and carrying the slogan “Change Habits, Save Nature,” RhuVaGa organized a discussion and opinion-sharing meeting on “Eco-friendly Tourism and Hygienic Waste Management in Kaptai Lake” on May 18, 2026. The speakers emphasized the importance of awareness, proper waste management, and environmentally friendly tourism to protect Kaptai Lake.

Keran Chakma, a regular passenger on the lake routes, said that most people in this region depend on the water of Kaptai Lake. But over time, the water is gradually becoming unusable. He warned that without immediate action, the lake may lose its natural beauty.

Alok Bikash Chakma, Unit Manager of Rangamati Tourism Holiday Complex, stressed the need to build the habit of using dustbins in tourist spots and boats. He said there is no alternative to raising awareness.

Nuku Khisa, Administrative and Research Manager of PBL, said that protecting nature requires collective commitment. Referring to the waste management system of resorts in Maya Island, he suggested that other resorts should also establish their own waste management systems. He also emphasized proper waste management in lakeside restaurants.

Journalist Bihari Chakma called for proper statistics and research on waste production and environmental pollution in Kaptai Lake and Rangamati town. He said that practical and evidence-based initiatives are necessary to address this crisis.

Renowned educator and writer Shishir Chakma encouraged ethical practices and behavioral change in personal life. According to him, environmental protection is not possible without changing our mindset.

Dolon Barua, Conservancy Inspector of Rangamati Municipality, highlighted the shortage of manpower and logistics. He informed that the process of acquiring land for a dumping station is ongoing.

Executive Officer of the municipality, Md. Mohsin, stated that around 40 to 42 tons of waste are generated daily in Rangamati town. He spoke about the municipality’s ongoing activities and future plans and said that protecting Kaptai Lake is everyone’s responsibility.

Md. Tarikul Alam, representative of Tourist Police Rangamati Region, said that the number of unregistered boats is higher than registered ones, and most waste is being dumped into the lake from these boats.

Md. Mominul Islam, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment in Rangamati, encouraged following the 3R method — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — to reduce plastic pollution. He said that proper waste management should begin at home.

Subrata Khisa, Project Manager of the NGO Ashika, appreciated the initiative and said that collective participation is essential to protect Kaptai Lake.

Boat driver Sugata Chakma called for placing dustbins on every boat so that passengers can easily dispose of waste properly.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of Rangamati Hill District, Md. Imranul Haque Bhuiyan, emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism. He mentioned that installing and properly maintaining public toilets at tourist spots can significantly reduce pollution in Kaptai Lake.

Finally, Gagan Chakma, representative of the organizing organization RhuVaGa, expressed disappointment that no major policy has been developed to protect Kaptai Lake even after 66 years. He urged all beneficiaries, responsible authorities, and the administration to give more importance to protecting the lake, saying that action must be taken before Kaptai Lake turns into another Buriganga of Rangamati.

This initiative has executed by Rhu Va Ga, supported by the project Eco leaders - implementing by the The Earth and funded by the UK in Bangladesh.
