RUET GIS Club RUET GIS Club is an organization dealing with enriching students with various applications of GIS-RS

The RUET Geographic Information Systems Club is an academic organization of the Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology campus that deals with the application of GIS and RS in our daily life, activities, and various aspects of research fields like discovery and application of new technologies, drone-based mapping, statistical analysis with maps, and spatial & temporal observation of data along with student/teacher led info sessions, and create seminars and workshops related to GIS applications. The RUET GIS Club is working to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with the integration of SDG 06: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action in all of its activities.

Today, October 5, marks the World Habitat Day, a day established by the UN in 1985 to talk about if everyone has a safe place to live and fundamental right to adequate housing.

This year's theme is "Adequate Housing for All." The numbers are difficult to ignore. More than 3 billion people lack adequate housing, while over 1.1 billion people live in informal settlements worldwide!

🏠 Adequate housing means secure land tenure, access to safe water and sanitation, drainage, roads and essential services, and also homes that can survive disasters.

This is where GIS matters. What isn't mapped isn't included, and what isn't included is not planned. Satellite imagery helps us understand how settlements grow and transform, while land-use data can reveal where people face risks such as environmental hazards, or inadequate access to basic services.

Our respected teacher and guest speaker, Muhaiminul Islam, shared a clear roadmap for students aspiring to pursue higher studies abroad, explaining the journey from preparation and university selection to securing a fully funded scholarship opportunity. His experiences, practical guidance and advice provided valuable direction for students planning their academic future overseas.

From RUET to Iowa State: Navigating the Roadmap to a Fully Funded PhD
The Department of Urban & Regional Planning (URP), RUET, is pleased to bring back our flagship academic and professional discussion platform, "URP Career Talk," with a brand-new series of sessions.

For this upcoming episode, we are honored to host our respected teacher, esteemed alumnus ('13 Series), and the Advisor of RUET GIS Club: Muhaiminul Islam Sir (Assistant Professor, Dept. of URP, RUET).

He recently started his PhD journey at Iowa State University, pursuing fully funded research in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. His doctoral research explores the cutting-edge intersections of geospatial data science, GeoAI, drone technology, and infrastructure monitoring.

In this interactive session, he will share firsthand insights into:
- Navigating the pathway to securing fully funded graduate opportunities in the USA.

This year's theme, "Global Action for a Cooler Planet," marks a milestone: 10 years since the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which took the fight against ozone depletion and connected it to something just as urgent, that is climate change and sustainable cooling.

This is where GIS and remote sensing come in.
πŸ›°οΈ Satellites measure ozone by reading the sunlight. Instruments like NASA's Ozone Monitoring Instrument and the newer TROPOMI sensor measure how much ultraviolet light passes through the atmosphere versus how much gets absorbed. Ozone molecules absorb UV in very specific, well-known wavelengths; so the gap in the spectrum tells scientists exactly how much ozone sits overhead. It can also detect the thinning of the Ozone layer or if there is a hole caused by humans!

We are delighted to share that the workshop on "π†πžπ­π­π’π§π  π’π­πšπ«π­πžπ 𝐰𝐒𝐭𝐑 π†πˆπ’, π‘πžπ¦π¨π­πž π’πžπ§π¬π’π§π  𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 π†πžπ¨π¬π©πšπ­π’πšπ₯ π“πžπœπ‘π§π¨π₯𝐨𝐠𝐲", organized by RUET GIS Club, was successfully held today, 20 August 2026, at RUET. We cordially thank Imtiaj Iqbal, President, RUET GIS Club, for conducting the session.

This workshop provided knowledge on the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and modern geospatial technology, including key concepts, data acquisition and management, remote sensing data processing, and GIS analysis techniques. 🌍

πŸ—Ί What is landsat?
β€œLandsat is a series of satellites run by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. These satellites have provided the longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land in existence. These images help scientists and other experts track changes to the Earth over time.”

From Landsat and Sentinel imagery to other satellite observations, these images give us a perspective of Earth that our eyes cannot view from the ground. Satellites use onboard optical and infrared sensors to capture reflected and emitted energy from Earth. Push-broom line-scanning technology measures the specific wavelengths and converts the raw radiation values into structured pixels. These valuable datasets are made accessible through platforms like USGS EarthExplorer, NASA Earthdata and Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, ready to be visualized and analyzed with GIS tools.
