What if a photograph could do more than capture a moment?

On this World Photography Day 2026, we are celebrating a different but significant side of photography: capturing our planet Earth, from above. 🛰

NASA’s 'Your Name in Landsat' initiative can turn alphabets into visual compositions using features in Landsat imagery, here we get our club’s name written on the map.👇

Now it’s your turn! 📸
1. Go to https://science.nasa.gov/specials/your-name-in-landsat/
2. Put your name into the text box.
3. Save and drop it in the comments and let us know how the Earth spells your name 😉

🗺 What is landsat?
“Landsat is a series of satellites run by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. These satellites have provided the longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land in existence. These images help scientists and other experts track changes to the Earth over time.”

From Landsat and Sentinel imagery to other satellite observations, these images give us a perspective of Earth that our eyes cannot view from the ground. Satellites use onboard optical and infrared sensors to capture reflected and emitted energy from Earth. Push-broom line-scanning technology measures the specific wavelengths and converts the raw radiation values into structured pixels. These valuable datasets are made accessible through platforms like USGS EarthExplorer, NASA Earthdata and Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, ready to be visualized and analyzed with GIS tools.

Happy World Photography Day!
