In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the World Trade Center Memorial Fund have installed a new memorial at the World Trade Center campus.
The Port Authority Employee Memorial honors the nearly 90 agency employees who died on 9/11 and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing, as well as those who have been sickened or died from illnesses as a result of working on post-9/11 recovery efforts.
“As we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11, all of New York continues to mourn the 84 Port Authority public servants who lost their lives that day as well as the six who lost their lives in 1993,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said. “This memorial is a fitting tribute and will provide loved ones and Port Authority colleagues a space of remembrance and reflection. I am grateful for the work of the WTC Memorial Fund for their efforts in establishing this monument.”
"The Port Authority employees honored in this memorial showed extraordinary courage in the face of the worst attacks on our nation, and paid the ultimate price for their service,” said New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. “This memorial will ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten and that future generations understand the profound gratitude we have for these heroes.”
“Our agency’s home at 4 World Trade Center faces Liberty Park, so it is fitting to have a space nearby for our Port Authority family to remember their fallen colleagues and for their loved ones to pay their respects,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.
“We thank the WTC Memorial Fund for their dedication and shared goal of honoring our fallen employees and making sure their legacy will not be forgotten,” said Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.
Located at Liberty Park, the memorial provides a quiet space for remembrance near the agency’s headquarters at 4 World Trade Center. Read the full press release here:
