Greener, cleaner and safer...yet stubbornly askew

7th Avenue South Alliance is a non-profit, community-based organization formed by local residents committed to making 7th Avenue South greener, cleaner and safer.

Carved diagonally through residential streets in 1917, 7th Avenue South quickly became a service station-lined gateway to the Holland Tunnel. You can see the vestiges of that era in many of the avenue’s low-rise buildings with their art deco-trimmed cornices.

Today, 7th Avenue South is a central artery in the Greenwich Village Historic District, where its wonky intersections, triangular buildings and wide sidewalks have the potential to enhance the charm of our neighborhood.

We envision a tidier thoroughfare with plantings to enhance curb appeal and calm vehicular traffic, more manageable intersections for pedestrians and cyclists, and a vibrant set of businesses that serve residents and visitors alike.

Through the efforts of our volunteers, our communication network with local businesses and our many partners, we have made a lot of progress. But there is still more to do!

GREENER

We have arranged for the planting of additional trees where possible, and have installed tree guards and planted tree pits with perennials south of Christopher Street. We hope to have all 7th Avenue South tree pits fitted with tree guards and planted with perennials in the coming years.

We also plant and maintain the DOT planters positioned at the various pedestrian areas from West 4th to Barrow Street. Depending upon local support, we may pursue street art or sidewalk planters where trees are precluded by subway infrastructure.

CLEANER

We have arranged for daily litter pick-up on 7th Avenue South between Christopher Street and Clarkson/Carmine, Bleecker Street from Christopher Street to 6th Avenue, Father Demo Square, 6th Avenue between Carmine and the West 4th Street Subway and Barrow Street between 7th Avenue South and Bedford Street.

Thank you to Councilman Corey Johnson for providing litter pick up on 7th Avenue South north of Christopher Street, and to DSNY for providing garbage bags! We are also doing periodic power washing on corners and in front of storefronts with greasy sidewalks.

SAFER

We regularly provide feedback to the DOT and the Community Board regarding initiatives to improve sight lines, clarify traffic patterns and make intersections safer. We are happy to report that a “complete street” redesign of 7th Avenue South, including a protected bike lane and the reconfiguring of several intersections, is in the works and should be implemented by DOT in 2018.

We have also secured funding from Councilman Johnson (via the Participatory Budgeting process) for the replacement of cobra-neck light fixtures with lights that have been approved by the Landmarks Commission for our historic district. Fixtures on the avenue between Christopher and Barrow Streets will be replaced in 2018. We hope to secure funding for the remaining fixtures in coming years.
