BM Kalimullah, 88, recalled his experience as a student of Law at DU and also as a CPB leader. He said he had come out on the streets and joined the leaders—namely, Abdul Matin (then known as Bhasha Matin), Gaziul Hoque, Toha, Kazi Mahbubul, Abdul Khaleque, Khandaker Mostaque Ahmed, Md Alauddin, Anwar Jahid, Golam Azam and many others on the afternoon of February 21 by violating Section 144 at the present Central Shahid Minar. “We pelted stones at the police deployed there,” recalled Kalimullah. “At one stage, the police opened fire and the bullet pierced Salam’s stomach; I took him immediately to the DMCH, where he later died,” he reminisced.
On February 22, 1952, he—along with many others—was arrested from near Sadarghat area and sent to Dhaka jail (now Dhaka Central Jail) for three days. Then Sheikh Mujib was also put into jail while Maulana Bhasani gave them inspiration for the movement. Kalimullah said: “The spirit of 1952’s Language Movement lies in the birth of Bangladesh.” He, however, added: “Our mother tongue Bangla needs to be made very simple in spelling to create interest among our future generations.”

৮৮ বছর বয়সী বি.এম. কলিমুল্লাহ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আইন বিভাগের ছাত্র এবং সিপিবির (CPB) নেতা হিসেবে তাঁর অভিজ্ঞতার স্মৃতিচারণ করেন। তিনি জানান, ১৯৫২ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি বিকেলে বর্তমান কেন্দ্রীয় শহীদ মিনার এলাকায় ১৪৪ ধারা ভঙ্গ করে তিনি রাজপথে নেমে এসেছিলেন এবং আব্দুল মতিন (যিনি ভাষা মতিন নামে পরিচিত), গাজীউল হক, তোয়াহা, কাজী মাহবুবুল, আব্দুল খালেক, খন্দকার মোশতাক আহমেদ, মো. আলাউদ্দিন, আনোয়ার জাহিদ, গোলাম আজমসহ আরও অনেক নেতার সঙ্গে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন। কলিমুল্লাহ স্মৃতিচারণ করে বলেন, "আমরা সেখানে মোতায়েন করা পুলিশের দিকে ইট-পাটকেল ছুড়েছিলাম। এক পর্যায়ে পুলিশ গুলি চালায় এবং একটি গুলি সালামের পেটে বিদ্ধ হয়; আমি তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে তাঁকে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাই, যেখানে পরে তিনি মারা যান।"
১৯৫২ সালের ২২শে ফেব্রুয়ারি সদরঘাট এলাকা থেকে আরও অনেকের সঙ্গে তাঁকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয় এবং তিন দিনের জন্য ঢাকা জেলে (বর্তমান ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগার) পাঠানো হয়। সে সময় শেখ মুজিবকেও কারাগারে বন্দি করা হয়েছিল, আর মাওলানা ভাসানী তাঁদের এই আন্দোলনের অনুপ্রেরণা জুগিয়েছিলেন। কলিমুল্লাহ বলেন, "৫২-র ভাষা আন্দোলনের চেতনার মধ্যেই বাংলাদেশের জন্ম নিহিত রয়েছে।" তবে তিনি আরও যোগ করেন, "আমাদের ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের মধ্যে আগ্রহ তৈরির জন্য আমাদের মাতৃভাষা বাংলার বানান আরও সহজ করা প্রয়োজন।"
