International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

Humanity & Inclusion (HI), in collaboration with the Safeguarding Resources and Support Hub (RSH), hosted a two-hour event on 4th September 2025 at the HI Bangladesh Country Office.

The program began with a safeguarding orientation for persons with disabilities, followed by a focused group discussion (FGD) on how PSEAH is perceived and addressed by persons with disabilities in Bangladesh, particularly within OPD and CSO programs.

Participants included representatives from OPDs, INGOs (such as ADD, British High Commission, B-SCAN, CDD, CBM, CSID, NCDW, Sightsavers, WDDF), safeguarding and PSEA focal persons, GBV and HR specialists, senior leadership, sector experts, and members of the disability community.

Speaking at the event, Sibghatullah Ahmed, Country Manager of HI Bangladesh, said:
"Safeguarding is in the priority of Humanity & Inclusion’s commitment to dignity and inclusion. This event created an important space for persons with disabilities and key stakeholders to share their voices and perspectives on PSEAH. Together with our partners, we will continue strengthening safe, inclusive, and accountable practices across all HI programs in Bangladesh."

Meanwhile, Md. Shohidul Islam Mithu, Country Compliance Manager of HI Bangladesh, emphasized:
"The engagement of persons with disabilities in this discussion is a powerful reminder that safeguarding must be shaped by those it is meant to protect. By listening, learning, and adapting our approaches, HI reaffirms its responsibility to ensure that every individual can access support and services free from harm, exploitation, or abuse."

Azom (not his real name), a 3-year-old lives in Rohingya Camp, Cox’s Bazar, was born with bilateral clubfoot. For years, he couldn’t sit, stand, or walk—and his family, having fled Myanmar, had no way to continue his treatment.

That changed when they met the team from Humanity & Inclusion (HI). With the support of generous donors, Azom received custom orthotic devices, regular therapy, and assistive tools. After months of follow-up, he can now stand and walk with minimal support!

His father Monjur says, “Before HI, we didn’t know how to help Azom. Now he is walking. That means everything to us.”

Because of your support, Azom is on his feet—and on his way to a brighter future.

After fleeing violence in Myanmar, Selim and his family sought refuge in Bangladesh in 2017. Living with polio since early childhood, Selim had spent years unable to walk, play, or attend school.

But everything began to change in 2024, thanks to the support from Humanity & Inclusion (HI) and CDD under the HI-UNHCR funded project. With regular physiotherapy and a KAFO device fitted by prosthetist Md. Jahangir Alam Akash, Selim slowly regained his strength.

Today, Selim stands tall—literally. He walks with little support, plays with friends, and has rejoined school in Class 3. His father dreams of returning home to Burma one day, but for now, Selim’s smile says it all: hope is alive.

His journey proves that the right support at the right time can transform lives.

On March 10, we celebrated National Disaster Preparedness Day 2025 in Barishal, a region often affected by severe disasters. HI and AVAS, in collaboration with local administration, held rallies and discussions in Sinnirchar and Habinagar. During the event, important decisions were made, including procuring chainsaws for road clearance and keeping schools open during emergencies. The day concluded with the planting of disaster-resilient tree saplings. Together, we are enhancing community resilience and preparing for the cyclone season ahead. Let's stay proactive and united for a safer Barishal!
