CMES (Centre for Mass Education in Science) is a national NGO of Bangladesh, established in 1978. Its aim is to provide alternative and second chance education for the disadvantaged and school dropouts. Starting with only a few volunteers, the organization now employs about two thousand competent personnel- a good part of them being teachers and technical
Mission
Its aim is to empower the disadva

ntaged people through an appropriate mass education and to take science and technology to them as a means of that empowerment. The mission is to create an effective, science-oriented, and creative human resource out of the disadvantaged adolescents and youth. Its efforts therefore, have been to enhance their potential to a more decent life and livelihood. We have worked closely with local govt. and administration along with mass media and journalists to do so. Needless to say that in continuity of our aim of enabling the community, we still trying to build up strong coalitions of social workers and NGOs as much as possible as we have been a continuously learning NGO, learning from and collaborating with other's relevant efforts home and abroad. Description
CMES always concentrates on bringing the world of education closer to the world of work through its programs such as Basic School System, and Adolescent Girls' Program. Our recent phase is planned to strengthen the process through developing modular second chance education package with livelihood skills and gender empowerment with the active support of national TVET(Technical and Vocational Education and Training) policy. As this has became a nationally emphasized sector with the new government policy to make this more effective and accessible even at the grass root. It has been practiced in CMES from the very beginning, because our main aim is to provide our students with technological know-how so that they can implement this in their practical lives. This is because, the central future challenge for CMES is to prove that such an initiative can be replicated nationwide for the benefit of poor adolescents, which would require inter-agency collaboration with state and non-state providers. Objectives & Approaches
The aim behind the creation of Centre for Mass Education in Science (CMES) was to arrange an appropriate and effective mass education for the common people encouraging their thoughts and actions in science & technology. This should help create the human resource development with particular inclusion of the disadvantaged. The objectives of the CMES programs are:
i) To provide alternative and second chance education for disadvantaged school dropouts. ii) To provide technical skills to the same target group so that they practice these at market level, earning while learning.
