The “Climate-Resilient Infrastructure for Sustainable Community Life in the Haor Region of Bangladesh” project has been successfully completed. The project was supported under the IKI Small Grants Programme, which aims to strengthen locally driven solutions for effective climate change mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity conservation.

CEGIS, on behalf of GIZ Bangladesh, provided technical assistance and was responsible for the overall monitoring and oversight of project activities.

The primary objective of the project was to design and implement climate-resilient protection measures in three selected Haatis (small elevated landforms within deep haor systems) in Sunamganj District, with the aim of safeguarding households and livelihoods from the adverse impacts of flash floods (Afaal). The interventions were planned and executed with due consideration of flood dynamics, wave direction, future climate change scenarios and the conservation of local biodiversity.

Under this project, the following activities has been implemented:

✅ 1.5 km of protective revetments and retaining wall
🌳 5,000+ native tree species planted as buffer zones
🏠 Elevated community courtyards in vulnerable villages

CEGIS, as a center of excellence in environment, water, and climate change, is committed to safeguarding the environment for future generations.

In Bangladesh’s flood-prone Haor region, communities face recurring flash floods that endanger lives, homes, and livelihoods. Supported by the International ...
