Ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductorsโ€”like diamond, III-nitrides, and oxide semiconductorsโ€”are enabling a new generation of electronics that can run faster and more efficiently under extreme voltage, temperature, frequency, and radiation conditions where conventional materials struggle.
In this talk, Dr. Haque will highlight the key roadblocks holding UWBG devices back today (reliable p/n-type doping, heat removal at very high power density, low-defect interfaces, and integration of dissimilar materials), and share how their lab is tackling them using an integrated workflow: advanced fabrication + emerging processing + defect/interface characterization + AI-guided modeling and experiment optimization. Dr. Haque will also cover ongoing projects on controlled doping routes for diamond and III-nitrides, low-resistance ohmic contacts, and improved thermal management using novel UWBG stacks. Furthermore, Dr. Haque will discuss about the MS and PhD opportunities at Texas State and how to apply for those opportunities.

Bio: Dr. Ariful Haque is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas State University and a core faculty member of the MSEC Ph.D. program. He brings both academic and industry expertise, including prior work at Intel in Logic Technology Development on next-generation semiconductor processes. Dr. Haque holds dual Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University in Electrical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering, along with graduate training in nanoengineering, and degrees in materials science and EEE (BUET). His research focuses on ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors, supported by major NSF and U.S. DoD fundingโ€”most notably as a co-leader of the NSF CREST Center for UWBG Semiconductor Device Materials. He has published 60+ peer-reviewed journal papers and directs a growing research group of postdocs and graduate students.

๐Ÿ”ฌSeminar on Semiconductor Chips - The Fuel Behind AI Revolution.

In Oct 2025, Nvidia's valuation surpassed 5 trillion dollars, making it the most valuable company in the world! What is going on with this Silicon Valley company? It is supplying the fuel needed to make AI ubiquitous around the globe. No doubt the AI revolution is shaking the world. This presentation will touch on what is making the AI revolution viable. It is nothing but specialized semiconductor chips known as AI accelerators. These tiny but monstrously powerful machines are making bots like ChatGPT viable. Every week new start ups are popping up in Silicon Valley with their secret sauce for AI accelerators - the race is on. Interestingly, semiconductor chips are enabling and benefiting from AI at the same time. An emerging trend in the industry is Agentic AI. Agentic AIs are specialized applications of AI targeting tasks like semiconductor design among many other possibilities. This presentation will talk about the emergence of agentic AI to revolutionize semiconductor design flow. EDA companies including Siemens EDA is in the forefront of agentic AI to automate semiconductor design flows in a radical way.

Dr. Abu Mahmudul Hassan is a senior executive in the high-tech industry in Silicon Valley (SV), California. He has over three decades of hands-on and management experience in Semiconductor design, verification, and test flows. A BUET graduate in Electrical Engineering, he completed his Masters and PhD from McGill University, Canada with Commonwealth Scholarship. He started his career at Nortel, Canada developing EDA software for DFT (Design for Test). Later he moved to SV, CA with Mentor Graphics which was later acquired by Siemens AG. Dr Hassan is now a senior Director with Siemens Digital Industries Software responsible for Digital Verification and Design for Test flows. He and his team, over the years, worked with almost every semiconductor chip company in the Americas providing EDA solutions including Agentic AI.

๐Ÿ”ฌSeminar on New Frontiers in Quantum Materials

We are pleased to host Dr. Md. Shafayat Hossain, Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also affiliated with the California NanoSystems Institute and the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering at UCLA. Before joining UCLA, he served as a lecturer and postdoctoral associate in the Department of Physics at Princeton University, and earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering & Materials Science from Princeton University. His research combines scanning tunneling microscopy, quantum transport, and optical techniques to explore quantum materials and next-generation devices. His work includes the discovery of a room-temperature, ambient-pressure quantum state and the experimental realization of several long-sought quantum phases, including Bloch ferromagnetism, the Pomeranchuk instability, hybrid topology, and topological excitonic insulators.
Dr. Shafayat's website: https://msh-qmind.framer.website/

In this talk, he will discuss how quantum materials can enable energy-efficient electronics and scalable quantum computing. The seminar will cover three active research directions: (i) topological excitonic insulators and dissipationless transport of charge-neutral and charged quasiparticles, (ii) unconventional superconductivity and charge density waves in kagome metals, and (iii) progress toward a room-temperature quantum spin Hall state and its path toward energy-efficient electronic devices.

Our esteemed speakers shared their experience, work motivation, research activities & opportunities, and how they overcame all obstacles with perseverance.

In the first session, ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐๐ข๐ง ๐™๐ก๐š๐จ presented an elaborate overview of the infrastructure, pursuits & challenges of IEEE and IEEE EDS. For the members and the executives of IEEE BUET Student Branch, it was really inspiring to gain extensive first-hand knowledge from a global leader like him.

The second session was conducted by ๐ƒ๐ซ. He walked us through his journey of futuristic electronics focusing on healthcare, environment, energy, robotics, space & defense applications, etc. He also shed light on the use of state-of-the-art CMOS technology to ensure rapid and volume manufacturing of semiconductor electronics. His friendly & personalized approach kept the students fully engaged with the talk.

The third session by ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐’๐š๐ฒ๐ž๐ž๐Ÿ ๐’๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ก๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ง was highly interesting & intriguing. He shared a few stories of his beginnings, memories of his academic life at BUET EEE, and his passion for semiconductors. Then, he explained his discovery of negative capacitance effect, as well as the research progress, challenges, and milestone achievements so far. Tech giants have used his discovery to improve their chip designs, to make their manufactured devices more sustainable by reducing energy consumption.

After the sessions ended, ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€. ๐. ๐Œ. ๐‡๐š๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง-๐”๐ซ-๐‘๐š๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ (Head of EEE, BUET) and our honourable guests presented the souvenir gifts to our distinguished speakers, followed by a photo session. Then ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ก๐ฆ๐ž๐ ๐™๐ฎ๐›๐š๐ข๐ซ delivered his closing speech to officially conclude the event.

The 3-hour long programme was a resounding success, with over 200 enthusiastic participants. There was an amazing opportunity to gain deep insights into semiconductors, emerging materials, energy-efficient architectures, and flexible device technologies that are shaping tomorrow's innovations.

On behalf of the organizing team, we extend our sincere gratitude to the guests, the speakers and the attendees for making this venture possible. By organizing more such events in future, we hope to build a strong connection among students and global icons. Combined efforts from the educational community can turn Bangladesh into the next Innovation Hub.
