Prantic Unnayan Society Prantic Unnayan Society (PRANTIC) established in 1998 . “Prantic” is a Bengali word means cornered or marginal. “Unnayan” means development.

PRANTIC is now working as a national NGO to serve more than 400 thousand marginalised people living in 15 sub-districts under 8 districts including the forcefully displaced Rohingya refugees. Hence Prantic Unnayan Society works for the development of marginal families, children and women in particular. Prantic classifies beneficiaries into four social strata as presented below. Political: Alienated or forced to leave ancestral holdings due to political rivalry, exploitation by the rich or pressure from dominant class/religion. Natural: Alienated and migrated due to natural calamities such as flood, river erosion and others. Social: Alienated due to lack of social acceptance such as s*x workers, orphans, street children, adolescents and working children in the households. Economic: Labourers, hawkers, small traders, marginal farmers and sharecroppers who are struggling with subsistence income and imposed to take foods below minimum requirement and having no surplus irrespective of cast, religion, and ethnicity.

Is it time for us to rethink development?

I have been involved in development work for nearly four decades. During the 1980s and 1990s, we largely understood development as poverty reduction. Over time, this understanding expanded. In light of the Sustainable Development Goals, we began addressing poverty through more specific areas such as education, health, livelihoods, gender, rights, environment, climate, governance and many others.

In almost every area, we added an important word: “empowerment.”

But after nearly four decades of experience, I find myself asking some questions.

Have we only increased people’s economic capabilities and self-reliance, or have we also made their overall lives happier and more fulfilling?

Income is rising. Economic opportunities are expanding. People are becoming more self-reliant in many respects. We can see progress across many development indicators.

But at the same time, are we seeing:
• Less social dissatisfaction—or more?
• Stronger family structures and relationships, or are some of them becoming weaker?
• Less social isolation?
• Stronger relationships, mutual trust and respect among people?
• Greater social cohesion, empathy and solidarity?
• Development that is increasing not only income and opportunities, but also people’s sense of happiness, peace and security?

I do not have simple answers to these questions myself.
In fact, I increasingly feel that we have often measured development through what can be quantified—income, employment, education, health, infrastructure and productivity. But have we given enough attention to relationships, mutual respect, social cohesion, emotional well-being, family bonds and people’s sense of meaning and fulfilment?

“Empowerment” is undoubtedly important. But if empowerment does not grow alongside responsibility, mutual respect, empathy, social cohesion and a sense of responsibility towards others, we should perhaps also ask where such development is taking us.
I have not reached any final conclusion. Rather, I am raising these questions for myself, for our profession and for the generations to come.

I believe development practitioners need to pause and reflect on our work and achievements.

What have we achieved?
What changes have we created?
Where have we succeeded?
Where might we have unintentionally created new challenges?
And most importantly—are the forms of development we are promoting truly helping people live happier, more peaceful, connected and dignified lives?

I would like to invite development practitioners, researchers, academics, policymakers and colleagues working at the field level to engage in an open, professional and constructive dialogue around these questions.

Perhaps our future thinking on development needs to give equal importance not only to “how much development” we achieve, but also to “what kind of life” and “what kind of society” we are helping to create.

I would genuinely value your experiences, reflections and perspectives.

Let us not debate simply to prove a point. Let us exchange ideas, listen to one another, and, where necessary, rethink what we mean by development.

EARN Project Orientation in Rangpur: A New Journey for Prantic Unnayan Society (PRANTIC), Bangladesh.

Yesterday, 16 September 2026, I had the pleasure of participating in an orientation programme on the Economic Acceleration and Resilience for NEET (EARN) Project, organised by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), EARN, Rangpur Division, at the BRAC Regional Office in Rangpur.

It was truly a pleasure and a proud moment for me to attend such a large gathering of colleagues from PRANTIC and BRAC representing Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts.

Among more than 50 participants, 41 were from Prantic Unnayan Society (PRANTIC). Of these, 9 were Upazila-level colleagues and 32 were Centre In-Charges, including 17 female colleagues. Their active participation reflected the strong field-level presence and commitment of PRANTIC towards this important initiative.

The orientation was led by Team Leader A.Z.M. Nazmul Islam Chowdhury and was the first-ever orientation meeting of the EARN Project that brought together field-level officials. More than four distinguished experts shared their valuable knowledge and guidance. The sessions were also engagingly facilitated by Syeda Ashrafiz Zaharia Prodhan, Key Expert – Social and Gender Norms, PMU, EARN, Rangpur.

As the EARN Project is funded by the World Bank, the orientation placed strong emphasis on quality, accountability, transparency, inclusion and careful implementation. Particular attention was given to social integration and meaningful community participation.

A key aspect of the implementation approach will be the mobilisation of communities and the formation of community groups at Union and Upazila levels. These groups will play an active role in identifying and selecting eligible NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young people aged 18–35 years, with 60% of the participants targeted to be female.

The scale of the EARN Project is truly significant. Across Bangladesh, the project aims to develop the skills of approximately 900,000 young people, supporting their pathways towards employment and entrepreneurship.

For PRANTIC, this is an important new responsibility and opportunity. Under the project, PRANTIC will establish and operate 82 Village-Level Training Centres (VLTCs) in Saidpur, Dimla and Jaldhaka Upazilas of Nilphamari District and provide skills development opportunities to 11,760 young people.

To implement this 30-month project, PRANTIC will employ a total of 411 staff members at different levels. This will undoubtedly be one of the largest and most challenging programmes undertaken by PRANTIC, requiring strong teamwork, professionalism, accountability, community engagement and close coordination with BRAC and the PIU

For me, yesterday’s orientation was more than just a training or introductory meeting. It was an important reminder of the responsibility that lies ahead and the opportunities this project can create for thousands of young people, particularly young women, in our communities.

The journey has just begun. There will certainly be challenges, but with the commitment of our colleagues, the active participation of communities, the guidance of our partners and the trust placed in PRANTIC, we hope to make this initiative meaningful and successful.

Let us hope for the best—and work together to make the best possible difference.

15 September 1998 — 28 Years of PRANTIC

On this day in 1998, a small group of like-minded people came together with a simple but deeply felt commitment: to stand beside people in distress, particularly during disasters and difficult times. What began primarily as a voluntary charitable initiative gradually evolved into a broader development journey, shaped by the needs of the people we serve and sustained by the trust, encouragement and support of countless well-wishers, donors, colleagues, partners and friends.

Over the past 28 years, PRANTIC has continued to learn, adapt and grow. From responding to emergencies, we gradually expanded our work into education, livelihoods, skills development, health, climate resilience, women’s empowerment, social protection and sustainable development.

Today, PRANTIC is working with more than 400,000 women and community members across 15 sub-districts in 8 districts of Bangladesh, including Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. This journey from a small disaster-response initiative to a grassroots development organisation has been made possible through the collective efforts, trust and support of so many people and institutions, espetially to our members, colleagues and program participants.

Over these 28 years, we have been privileged to work alongside trusted donors, partners and friends, including BRAC, OBAT Helpers USA, Human Concern International (HCI) USA, Hope International, HRF, OBAT Canada and many others. Their trust, partnership, flexibility and continued support have helped PRANTIC turn ideas into opportunities and challenges into meaningful action for the communities we serve.

Yet, beyond every project and partnership, it is the resilience, courage and aspirations of the people we serve that continue to inspire us. Their determination reminds us why PRANTIC was created and why we must continue moving forward.

On this special day, we express our deepest gratitude to all our donors, partners, colleagues, volunteers, community leaders, well-wishers and, most importantly, the people who have trusted PRANTIC and walked with us throughout this journey.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to the spirit with which PRANTIC was born — serving people with dignity, standing beside those in need, and working together to create meaningful and lasting change.

28 years of service.
28 years of learning.
28 years of partnership.
28 years of hope.

With heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of the PRANTIC journey.

Happy Inception Day, PRANTIC.

Drawing Competition – KG ও Grade 1
Word Game Competition – Grade 2 ও 3
Sentence Making Competition – Grade 4 ও 5

“Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity” প্রতিপাদ্যের আলোকে এই উদযাপন শিশুদের কাছে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বার্তা পৌঁছে দিয়েছে যে, সাক্ষরতা শুধু পড়তে ও লিখতে শেখা নয়; বরং শিক্ষা ও জ্ঞানের মাধ্যমে নিজেকে বিকশিত করা, সমাজে ইতিবাচক অবদান রাখা এবং একটি সুন্দর, নিরাপদ ও সমৃদ্ধ ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে তোলার পথ।
