🚨 Tackling a Silent Crisis: Indoor Air Pollution in Rural Bangladesh
On May 11, 2026, SHISUK organized and hosted the International Community Program on Indoor Air Pollution Awareness at our Regional Office in Daudkandi, Cumilla.
This crucial initiative brought together international experts, government representatives, NGO networks, and community women leaders to address the severe health risks associated with traditional biomass cooking fuels. Collaborating with Universitas Airlangga, the World University Association for Community Development (WUACD), Daffodil University Bangladesh, CEACAN, Shisuk Annana Nari Unnayan Shangstha, and Youth Leading Climate Action (YLCA), the program successfully bridged the gap between global research and grassroots reality. Key highlights of the program included:Field Visit to Doulatpur Village: International delegates—including Prof. Dr. Aziz Rahman, Dr. Sapto Andriyono, and Dr. Muhammad Saud—observed women-led agroecological activities and examined rural kitchen setups to understand local realities.
Assessing Cooking Practices: Delegates analyzed the use of traditional mud-made stoves versus improved alternatives like the "Bondhu Chula" and discussed the reliance on biomass fuels such as firewood, rice husk, and dried cow dung.
Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue: A critical discussion session at the SHISUK Training Center focusing on the invisible health impacts of smoke exposure, which disproportionately causes respiratory and lung complications in women and children. Community-Led Solutions: Strong commitments from local stakeholders, including BARD and CEA CAN Network representatives, to promote improved cookstoves, better ventilation, and widespread community outreach. Indoor air pollution remains a neglected public health concern. By combining practical field observations with expert knowledge exchange, we are driving collaborative dialogue to build safer, healthier household environments in Bangladesh.
