Meet Abdur Shukkur from the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, whose house was about to collapse due to soil erosion. UN and NGO reports reveal that in 2025 nearly 9 out of 10 shelters are structurally damaged, and soil erosion caused by monsoon mudslides is putting families at risk.
Through community consultations, DRC identified household-level soil erosion as a critical but overlooked gap in support for families. Under the Resilience and Adaptation Fund (RAF), DRC is working in 4 refugee camps to support community-driven household-level soil stabilization, protecting shelters, improving living conditions, and strengthening resilience.
With such initiatives we anticipate:
โœ… Immediate safety and stability during monsoons
โœ… Strengthened household ownership, skills, and maintenance capacity
โœ… Scalable solutions integrated into site development and Emergency Preparedness and Response in the camps
We appreciate and acknowledge the support of UK International Development in helping us ensure that families live in safe shelters.

Last month, Site Management Support (SMS) team from DRC conducted an assessment engaging the community members of Rohingya camp 8-E to familiarize them with how to identify risks of landslide, soil erosion, and slope failuresโ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ.

This initiative focuses on empowering communities with adequate knowledge and skills to lead their own disaster risk reduction efforts, mitigate the climatic risks, and develop ownership of their community.

๐Ÿค We appreciate the support from FCDO in standing with the community and assisting their efforts to create safer, stronger, and more sustainable living spaces.

Eight years since being forcibly displaced, the Rohingya people remain caught in uncertainty. Refugee families in Bangladesh face daily risks, from safety threats to lack of basic services. Their dignity and future are bleak.

Through the Protection Consortium, we are on the ground, listening to their voices, defending their rights, and strengthening their resilience in the face of immense challenges.

Together, we continue to stand with the Rohingya.

Manuel Alejandro Tique has devoted his work to assisting displaced communities, migrants, and refugees.
His commitment to humanitarian action has been exemplary. Today, he remains detained in Venezuela without access to a trial.

No humanitarian worker should face detention for carrying out their mission.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We call for his release.

Today marks 8 years since the Rohingya refugee crisis began.
Nearly a million refugees continue to live in Coxโ€™s Bazar, Bangladesh, the worldโ€™s largest refugee camp settlement.

Today, for , DRC people from all over the world say: humanitarian workers are .

We repeat this grim line every year โ€“ and yet, killing aid workers has become normalized: 2024 was the deadliest year on record for Humanitarian workers; 2025 is on track to be worse.

Their work โ€“ meant only to save lives โ€“ is underfunded, overstretched and under attack.

The promise of protection is broken: Violations of international humanitarian law continue; every red line crossed meets impunity, indifference and hypocrisy.

Yet humanitarians still head toward gunfire, checkpoints and danger.

They do not give up โ€“ and we must not give up on them.

This World Humanitarian Day we renew our call โ€“ louder, sharper, uncompromising:

Respect the rules of war.
Protect those who protect humanity.
End impunity โ€“ keep perpetrators accountable.
The world is watching. โ€“ now.

Our story

The Danish Refugee Council assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe: we provide emergency aid, fight for their rights, and strengthen their opportunity for a brighter future. We work in conflict-affected areas, along the displacement routes, and in the countries where refugees settle. In cooperation with local communities, we strive for responsible and sustainable solutions. We work toward successful integration and โ€“ whenever possible โ€“ for the fulfillment of the wish to return home.

The Danish Refugee Council was founded in Denmark in 1956, and has since grown to become an international humanitarian organization with more than 7,000 staff and 8,000 volunteers. Our vision is a dignified life for all displaced.
