Who is Amelia Earhart? Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and writer. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and solo from Honolulu to the US Mainland. She set many other records, was one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots
✈️How did she become a Zonta member? The first Zonta club was founded in Buffalo, NY in 1919. In 1926 Amelia Earhart became a member of the Boston chapter and later transferred to the New York City Zonta chapter.
In 1932 Amelia Earhart Putnam was awarded a ZONTA trophy for distinguished flying. She accomplished things in aviation that no woman or man had done before.
In 1935 at Purdue University she became an aeronautical engineering advisor and career counselor to female students. She encouraged women and girls to explore the world of science and engineering. A member of the National Women’s party and early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
✈️Do you know about the Amelia Earhart Zonta Fellowship program? Globally, women make up around 25 percent of the workforce in the aerospace industry. In an effort to carry out its mission that women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men, Zonta International offers the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. https://www.zonta.org/Web/Web/Programs/Education/Amelia_Earhart_Fellowship.aspx
The Zonta International Amelia Earhart fellowship established in her honor in 1938 a year after her disappearance has awarded 1,473 fellowships to 1,044 women from 70 countries across the globe. The US$10,000 Fellowship is awarded annually to up to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences. It may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.
🤗Fun Fact🤗 Did you know Earhart created a clothing line called “Amelia Fashions” in 1933? Earhart had been interested in flying apparel for women for years. At the beginning of her career, Earhart had to wear aviation suits that were designed for men and poorly fitted for a woman. There was nothing else available. The outfits were crafted for practicality and designed to suit the needs of “active women.” They broke the mold for traditional women’s dress during the 1930s.
