Today we celebrate World Environment Day — June 5, 2026.

This year's theme: "Inspired by nature for climate for our future."

Nature holds the answers. From forests to wetlands, Earth's ecosystems are our most powerful allies in drawing carbon from the atmosphere and securing a livable future for all.

Let's listen. Let's protect. Let's restore. 🌸

Bangladesh stands at the frontline of the climate crisis, where environmental vulnerabilities often intersect with existing social and gender inequalities. This podcast will explore the strategies, policies, and grassroots initiatives that are advancing climate justice and gender justice in Bangladesh. The discussion will examine how women, marginalized communities, and climate-vulnerable populations experience the impacts of climate change, while highlighting policy frameworks, community-led adaptation practices, and pathways toward inclusive and equitable development.

The podcast features Dr. Kazi Mahmudur Rahman, Professor, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), as the speaker. The discussion is hosted by Suraiya Begum, Director of Research Initiatives Bangladesh.

This Podcast is organized under Research Initiatives Bangladesh (RIB)’s ongoing project, “Advancing Transitional Justice in Bangladesh 2026,” with the support of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung South Asia.

The podcast aims to foster critical dialogue on justice-centered climate action, gender-responsive policymaking, and the role of citizens, civil society, and state institutions in building a more resilient and equitable Bangladesh.

Under the CRA Action at Saidpur, a hands-on training session on paper bag and carton making was organized today for women from the Saidpur Harijan Colony as an initiative to promote alternative livelihood opportunities. A total of 20 women participated in the training.

The participants received practical training on producing four different types of paper products, including small and large cartons commonly used in hotels, small paper envelopes for pharmacies, and two types of paper bags widely used in fruit and grocery shops.

Alongside the skills development training, the participants were also connected with marketing channels to ensure that the products they produce can be sold easily in the local market. It has been agreed that the cartons can be sold at BDT 10 per piece, while the paper bags can be sold at BDT 70 per kilogram. Arrangements have also been made for the products to be collected directly from their homes at the end of each day.
According to the trainer, the women may be able to earn approximately BDT 18,000–20,000 per month while working from home. The Harijan women appeared highly enthusiastic and motivated throughout the training session.
